La Plagne (name for 'terrace', 'small plain in the mountains') is a ski area with over 220 kilometers of slopes in the Savoie department ( France ). It is located above the Tarentaise Valley. Over 110 lifts open up the slopes of the Dome de Bellecôte (La Plagne) up to an altitude of 3400 m. As a glacier area , La Plagne is considered to be snow reliable, and many of the slopes are between 2000 and 3000 meters. La Plagne and Les Arcs form the Paradiski ski pass network . The La Plagne and Les Arcs ski areas are linked by the world's largest passenger cable car. On beautiful sunny days, the peaks of the ski area offer an incomparable view of Mont Blanc .

Bobsleigh and toboggan run

As part of the 1992 Winter Olympics in nearby Albertville , the luge and bobsleigh competitions were held in La Plagne. For this purpose, the first artificial ice channel was built in France, which can still be used today for international competitions in bobsleigh and luge . There are also regular bobsleigh rides for tourists in special sledges.

As part of the candidacy of the city of Annecy to host the 2018 Winter Olympics , it was planned that the corresponding competitions in luge , bobsleigh and skeleton would also be held in La Plagne.

Winter sports

La Plagne offers 225 kilometers of slopes 130 slopes and 80 km of cross -country ski . The entire ski area has 425 kilometers of slopes. The ski area is open for skiing from the end of December to mid-April. Numerous hiking trails and other leisure activities complete the offer.

The stations

Plagne Center (1970 m)

Plagne Center was the cornerstone of the ski area and was opened in 1961. Initially the station was only called La Plagne, but was renamed Plagne Center when the ski area was expanded with the construction of new stations. Since then, Plagne Center has been the real center of the ski area.

Aime-La Plagne (2100 m)

The station is located in the municipality of Aime and was completed in December 1969. The large main building of the station is reminiscent of a huge cruise ship.

Plagne Bellecôte (1930 m)

This station opened in 1974 after having been planned in 1968. In 1975 the gondola lift that connects Bellecôte with the Roche de Mio (2745 meters) was put into operation . Three years later, the railway was extended to open up the Bellecôte glacier (3250 m). This can be reached in 40 minutes from the valley station (the Bellecôte station is in the middle of the La Plagne ski area). Bellecôte is the heart of all ski movements as part of the Paradiski program, as all places in the La Plagne ski area can be reached from there. The Bellecôte structure is also called the dam (French: la Barrage), as it is very reminiscent of such a structure.

Montchavin (1250 m)

Above Montchavin is the Vanoise Express , the cable car that connects La Plagne with Les Arcs. In order to maintain a constant connection, all slopes in this area are equipped with snow cannons.

Les Coches (1450 m)

Les Coches is only 200 meters above Montchavin and can be easily reached from there on foot or by cable car.
