The Vanoise Express in Savoy ( France ) is the largest double-decker cable car in Europe.

nature

It consists of two independent, parallel cable car systems, each with a cabin, which connects the ski areas of La Plagne and Les Arcs with each other across the Vallée du Panthurin without supports, thus making Paradiski possible. The stations in Montchavin (La Plagne) and Plan Peisey (Les Arcs) are at 1548 m and 1612 m, respectively, so that the difference in altitude is only 64 m. The Vanoise Express reaches a maximum height of 380 meters above ground and has a length of 1800 meters, which can be covered in 3 minutes 50 seconds.

The two cable car systems each consist of an aerial tramway with only one cabin, which is suspended from two suspension ropes (75 mm). The pulling rope (45 mm) is led back above the carrying ropes and has two own carrying ropes (42 mm) for this purpose. Each cabin has two floors and holds 200 people plus the cabin attendant. They are currently (2017) the largest cabins on a cable car in Europe. A fully loaded cabin weighs 29 t and travels at up to 12.5 m / s (45 km / h).

history

This cable car was built in 2002/2003 on behalf of the Compagnie des Alpes by POMA , a French company that is associated with the South Tyrolean Leitner AG . The investment was over 15 million euros. The facility was officially opened in December 2003. During the 2007/2008 season, operations were suspended for the time being because the suspension ropes showed damage that no longer allowed safe operation. In summer 2008 the ropes were exchanged so that the cable car could reopen on December 20, 2008 at the beginning of the season.
