Samnaun double-decker railway

The double-decker railway Samnaun (called: Twinliner) is a cable car in Switzerland that runs from the valley station (1778 m above sea level) in Samnaun-Ravaisch over three supports to the mountain station (2500 m above sea level) on the Alp Trida Sattel . There are connections to Alp Trida and over the Idalp to Ischgl .

It was the first cable car in the world to use double-decker cabins. The cabins hold 180 people, 114 of them on the lower floor and 65 people as well as the cabin attendant on the upper floor. A fully occupied cabin weighs 27 tons.

The cable car has an inclined length of 2258.63 meters and overcomes a height difference of 722 meters. The maximum ground clearance is in the area between the 2nd and 3rd pillars and is approx. 185 meters high. The gradient of a maximum of 65.5% is between the valley station and the 1st support. The aerial tramway has two suspension cables with a diameter of 64 millimeters (22.5 kg / m) and a traction cable with a diameter of 45 millimeters (7.3 kg / m).

The train can transport up to 1620 people per hour.

The drive consists of an AC drive in the valley station with an output of 1400 kW or approx. 2000 hp, a torque of 8700 Nm and a power consumption of up to 1250 amperes. At the maximum speed of 10 m / s, the motor makes approx. 1300 revolutions / minute. The emergency drive is diesel-hydraulic with an output of 500 hp.

The cable car was built in 1995 in just five months by the then still independent Garaventa AG and commissioned by Bergbahnen Samnaun AG for the 1995/96 winter season.

It runs parallel to the older aerial tramway, which is still in operation.
