history

Star Airlines' Lockheed L-1011-500 TriStar in 1999

XL Airways France was founded in 1995 by Cédric Pastrour under the name Star Europe . The French tour operator Look Voyages initially held a 58.6% stake in the company. Operations began on December 20, 1995 with a flight from Lyon to Tenerife . Initially, the company used a Boeing 737-300 . Two 737-400s added to the fleet in April 1996. Between December 1996 and March 1997, Star Europe operated long-haul flights from Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle Airport to the Caribbean for the first time. A McDonnell Douglas MD-11 was used , which the company had rented from the Belgian City Bird . During 1997 the company replaced its Boeing 737 with five Airbus A320-200s . In October 1997 the company changed its name to Star Airlines . In 1998 the Canadian group Transat AT, which also operates the airline Air Transat , took over a majority stake in Star Airlines.

In 2002 Star Airlines received its first Airbus A330 .

Star Airlines was acquired by UK- based XL Leisure Group in 2006 and renamed XL Airways France on November 23, 2006 . XL Airways France and its sister company XL Airways Germany were bought by Straumur Investment Bank after the XL Leisure Group went bankrupt in 2008 . XL Airways UK , however, ceased operations in 2008, and XL Airways Germany followed in 2012, making XL Airways France the last company in this group today.

XL Airways France is one of 34 airlines that have a contract with the Amadeus IT Group . Through him, all travel agencies have access to all flights of the contractual partners.

It initially ceased flight operations on September 30, 2019. A new admission should not take place before October 4, 2019. On that day, the airline's final end was announced.
