XL Airways UK (originally Saber Airways , then Excel Airways ) was a British charter airline of the Avion Group based in Crawley .

history

A Boeing 737-200 from the original company Saber Airways .

The airline was founded in 1994 as Saber Airways and began operations on December 17, 1994.

In March 2004 Air Atlanta Icelandic took over 40.5 percent of the Excel shares and soon expanded its stake in it. The airline adopted its current name after 67 percent of its shares were acquired by Libra Holidays Group in November 2006 .

On September 12, 2008, it was announced that XL Leisure had filed for bankruptcy. All flights have been canceled. This affected XL Leisure Group Plc and its subsidiaries XL Airways UK Limited, Excel Aviation Limited, Explorer House Limited, Aspire Holidays Limited, Freedom Flights Limited, Freedom Flights (Aviation) Limited, The Really Great Holiday Company plc, Medlife Hotels Limited, Travel City Flights Limited and Kosmar Villa Holidays plc. The reasons given were the high kerosene prices and the general economic weakness.

The sister companies XL Airways Germany and XL Airways France were not affected by the bankruptcy and were taken over by the Straumur Investment Bank . However, XL Airways Germany also ceased operations in 2012.

Destinations

XL Airways UK operated mainly short and medium haul charter flights to holiday destinations as well as some long haul flights.
