Air Atlantique is an English airline based in Coventry that specializes in nostalgic flights with an extensive fleet of historic aircraft.

history

Air Atlantique was founded in 1969 under the company General Aviation Services as a provider of aircraft maintenance on the Channel Island of Jersey . In the same year, a Cessna 336 began operating on demand , and the company also became the British distributor for the aircraft manufacturer American Aviation . In 1971, the company's headquarters were relocated to Sherburn-in-Elmet in North Yorkshire and later to Doncaster . There one changed the company to Eastern Aviation and took over the operation of the local airfield . In 1974, the parts of the company dealing with maintenance and airport operations were sold and flight operations continued as Air Atlantique .

In 1976, the first two Douglas DC-3s were added to the fleet for cargo flights , at times Air Atlantique claimed to have the largest DC-3 fleet in the world. Two Douglas DC-6s acquired in 1979 could not be operated economically due to the oil crisis . In 1981 the fleet was relocated to Blackpool Airport and in 1985 to Stansted Airport , where the subsidiary Atlantic Air Transport was founded.

In 1986 the company moved to Baginton, south of Coventry . Due to the limited cargo capacity of the DC-3, aircraft of the type DC-6 were floated again. Between 1990 and 1994 Air Atlantique operated as Air Corbiere flights to the Channel Islands.

The freight division was spun off in July 2004 as part of a management buy-out and now operates under the name Atlantic Airlines . Additional divisions were sold when the owners reached retirement age. Today Air Atlantique primarily operates historic aircraft under the Classic Flight brand .

fleet

An airworthy Douglas DC-6 in the colors of the original owner, British Eagle, was in service until 2008 .

As of January 2013, the Air Atlantique fleet consists of fourteen aircraft. The company also has other machines, including the Douglas DC-6 , which are currently in a non- airworthy condition.
