bmibaby was a British low-cost airline based in Castle Donnington and a subsidiary of bmi .

history

Donington Hall, the seat of bmibaby

The airline was founded on January 17, 2002 as a subsidiary of Deutsche Lufthansa and British Midland Airways ( bmi for short ) and took off on March 22, 2002 on its maiden flight from East Midlands to Málaga .

Since June 2005, the airline has also offered seats on connections operated by the parent company bmi in order to be able to serve more airports within Europe. However, unlike bmi - which also left in May 2012 - bmibaby was never a member or partner of the Star Alliance .

Until 2006, bmibaby operated another base at Durham Tees Valley Airport , which was abandoned.

In November 2009, bmibaby announced that up to 158 employees were to be laid off and the fleet would be reduced from 17 to 12 machines as part of the restructuring required by the current difficult industry environment.

In October 2011 the bases in Cardiff and Manchester were closed in favor of a newly opened base in Belfast .

At the end of 2011, the owner Lufthansa initiated the sale of the parent company bmi to IAG , but bmibaby is to be separated from bmi and sold separately. In February 2012, a corresponding agreement was concluded with a previously unnamed British company that bmibaby would take over from bmi by summer 2012. A little later, however, it was reported that several potential buyers would not submit a bid and the search for buyers would continue. In May 2012 it was announced that from June 2012 a total of 21 routes, including all destinations from Belfast City, will no longer be served. As announced in May 2012, the remaining routes ended on September 9, 2012, so bmibaby ceased operations on that date. Competitors like Jet2.com and Flybe have announced the acquisition of several routes from bmibaby.

Destinations

bmibaby recently flew from its bases at Belfast City , East Midlands and Birmingham airports to a total of 36 cities and holiday destinations within Europe, such as Paris , Prague , Venice , Menorca , Geneva and Glasgow . The only destinations in German-speaking countries were both Cologne / Bonn Airport , which was served from East Midlands Airport until May 2012, and Munich from East Midlands and Cardiff since autumn 2010 - these routes have also been discontinued.

fleet

When operations ceased in September 2012, the bmibaby fleet consisted of 14 aircraft with an average age of 16.2 years:
