history

Orion Airways was founded on November 28, 1978 as a subsidiary of the British tour operator Horizon Travel . The company was based at East Midlands Airport. Flight operations began on March 18, 1980 with three Boeing 737-200s from Birmingham , London-Luton , Manchester and East Midlands airports . Orion Airways mainly carried out IT charter flights to the Mediterranean , Portugal and the Canary Islands , as well as occasional services ( ad hoc charter ) within Western Europe. In the spring of 1981 three more Boeing 737-200s added to the fleet. In September 1981 the company was able to carry the millionth passenger. With the delivery of its first Boeing 737-300 on January 29, 1985, Orion Airways became the first operator of this type of aircraft outside the USA.

In addition to charter flight operations, the company applied for scheduled flight rights on routes from Great Britain to Spain in the mid-1980s and was granted these in 1986. Scheduled air traffic began with the start of the 1986 winter flight schedule. In April 1987 the company acquired two wide- bodied Airbus A300 aircraft from Lufthansa , which were used on the main routes, particularly to Palma de Mallorca .

The tour operator Horizon Travel , owner of Orion Airways , was taken over in October 1988 by the Thomson Travel Group , which in turn was owned by the charter airline Britannia Airways . As a result of the takeover, Orion Airways was integrated into Britannia Airways on January 26, 1989 .
