Birmingham Airport ( IATA : BHX , ICAO : EGBB ) is the international airport of the second largest British city of Birmingham and currently the seventh largest airport in the country in terms of passenger volume .

history

The construction of the airport goes back to a city council resolution of 1928; however, it was not opened until 1939. During the Second World War , the runways were then asphalted. 1967 began a scheduled flight service with Vickers VC10 to New York City .

In 1984 a new terminal building was opened to the east of the runway, and a second terminal was added on July 26, 1991. In 2008 the shorter of both runways was closed. In 2009 a new part of the terminal opened as the International Pier , and in 2014 the runway was extended to 3,052 meters.

Birmingham had two terminals until the beginning of 2011, Terminal 2 being used by Flybe and Ryanair and Terminal 1 being used by all other airlines. In February 2011, the two terminals were merged into a single terminal through renovations and the creation of new central areas.
