Blackpool Airport is an airport in Lancashire in the United Kingdom . It bears the name of the adjacent city of Blackpool to the north , but lies in the urban area of Lytham St Annes .

history

Blackpool Airport opened in 1909. During the Second World War , the Royal Air Force used the facility under the name RAF Squires Gate . Over time, the airport was expanded so that it still exists today as a commercial airport. In 2009 it celebrated its 100th anniversary.

Blackpool Airport was closed on October 15, 2014 after no investor was found.

Citywing has been flying to the airport again since 2015 .

Incidents

On June 29, 1972, an HFB 320 of the Inter City flight (registration D-CASY ) crashed while attempting to take off from the airport. The elevator lock had not been released before take-off, which prevented the machine from taking off. The start was aborted at very high speed. The plane rolled over the end of the runway and a railroad line and came to a halt at a holiday camp. Seven of the eight inmates were killed.
