Stobart Air (formerly Aer Arann ) is an Irish regional airline based in Dublin and based at Dublin Airport . It operates primarily under the Aer Lingus Regional brand for Aer Lingus and under a franchise agreement for flybe .
history
Stobart Air was founded as Aer Arann in 1970 and began offering flights between Galway and the three Aran Islands . In 1994, Padraig O'Ceidigh bought the airline and began expanding the number of destination airports and the fleet. The company took over regional flights under the name Aer Arann Express with larger aircraft types, also outside of Ireland on behalf of Aer Lingus and flybe .
The airline has expanded its route network significantly since its inception, especially since 1998 when the route between Donegal Airport and Dublin was established. In the same year, Aer Arann began cargo flights between Dublin and Coventry and flights to the UK .
In 2002 the original company was spun off under the name Aer Arann Islands as a subsidiary for island flight operations.
The first passenger flight outside of Ireland started in 2000 when daily service was established on the route from Dublin to the Isle of Man . In 2003, 625,000 passengers flew with Aer Arann. In June 2004 the first flight to continental Europe started with the opening of the route between Galway via Waterford and Lorient in France . In October 2004, Aer Arann received a bronze medal from the European Regions Airline Association for outstanding achievements. In 2004, 400,000 passengers were transported via Cork Airport, an increase of 57% over 2003.
In January 2010, Aer Arann signed an agreement with Aer Lingus and operates twelve of their regional routes under the Aer Lingus Regional brand .
At the end of 2010, the financially troubled Aer Arann Express was taken over by the British transport company Stobart Group . Since 2011 she has also performed under the name Aer Arann Regional .
In March 2012 it was announced that Aer Arann would in future operate as Aer Lingus Regional and cease flights and marketing under its own name.
Aer Arann has been operating under the name Stobart Air since 2014 . The renaming was the final step in the restructuring program and was completed in late 2014. From June 2014, in addition to the flights operated for Aer Lingus, flights will also be operated for the British company flybe .
