history
In 1986 the airfield, which until then had only had a grass runway, was upgraded by state and private investors to a regional airport with international connections; a further expansion phase with a runway extension was carried out in 1990.
Location and transport links
The airport is located near Carrickfinn, County Donegal , on the Atlantic coast , at a straight line distance 8 km southwest of Gweedore and 9 km north of Dungloe , but 45 km from the city of Donegal . It only has a road connection.
Airlines and Destinations
Loganair ( Flybe ) flies from Donegal Airport to Dublin twice a day in 40 minutes and to Glasgow several times a week in 50 minutes . Before 2011, these routes were operated by Aer Arann . The route to Dublin is subsidized by the state.
The airport is also becoming increasingly important for helicopter traffic to the drilling platforms off the coast.
