An Clochán Liath (or An Clochán an Liath; official Irish name, ( German  the gray stone ) English Dungloe ) is a place in County Donegal in the far north-west of the Republic of Ireland .

The place

An Clochán Liath is located in the west of County Donegal in close proximity to the Atlantic in a Gaeltacht region, which is why the Irish name An Clochán Liath is the (only) official name of the place. Dating back to a mistake by naval cartographers in the mid-19th century, the place is still often misspelled Dunglow today . Regardless of the officially valid An Clochán Liath , Dungloe is the name that is seen much more frequently, just as English is the common language of the residents. Small Irish-speaking exclaves are more likely to be found outside the city. The population of Dungloe was determined in the 2016 Census at 1164 people.

Dungloe developed as a town in the mid-18th century and today functions as the administrative and commercial center for West Donegal, especially The Rosses ( Na Rosa ), a geographical and social region in West Donegal with its own separate from the rest of Donegal distinctive identity. Dungloe is also the seat of the Dungloe District Court , serving Southwest Donegal, and is home to the only secondary school in the district. The English name Dungloe originated in the late 18th century when the monthly market was relocated from Dún an Gleó, five miles away, to the burgeoning An Clochán Liath . This name in turn goes back to a gray rock slab made of granite, which allowed the only passage in the river bed in the valley floor of the village before the bridge was built (1762).

Transport and tourism

At Clochán Liath lies - between Glenties in the south and Gaoth Dobhair in the north - on the N56 , which opens up from Donegal Town to the west and north of the county and also connects Dungloe with Letterkenny , the largest city in the county. An Clochán Liath is 72 km from Donegal Town and 51 km from Letterkenny. Bus Éireann connects Dungloe (as well as private bus companies) to Donegal Town with access to the long-distance bus network of Bus Éireann, while another private operator, Lough Swilly Bus , provides connections to the north of the county and east to Letterkenny and Derry . Between 1903 and 1940, An Clochán Liath was also connected to a regional railway network; the "Dungloe railway station" was four miles outside of town. The company that now operates Lough Swilly Bus is the same that operated the railroad. A good 12 kilometers away from An Clochán Liath is Donegal Airport, a small regional airport from which Loganair offers flights twice a day to Dublin and several times a week to Glasgow in Scotland (as of 2012).

The town's main source of income is tourism, especially through the Mary From Dungloe International Festival of Irish Music, which has been held annually in late July or August since the 1960s . Another festival is held each fall in honor of Irish Republican activist and writer Peadar O'Donnell . A little north of the city is the historic church of Templecrone, in whose parish An Clochán Liath lies. Located in close proximity to the sea, An Clochán Liath also offers its visitors bays with sometimes fine sandy beaches a short distance away.
