Scandinavian Airlines Ireland Ltd , also known as SAS Ireland or SAIL , is an Irish airline based in Dublin and a subsidiary of SAS Scandinavian Airlines . The airline only operates flights on behalf of SAS. Although it is an Irish airline, none of the aircraft are based in Ireland, but rather at London Heathrow Airport and Malaga Airport .

history

SAS established its Ireland-based subsidiary in early 2017 and wanted to be operational by November 1, 2017. Originally, the airline should be equipped with nine new Airbus A320neo ; five of them will take off from London Heathrow and later from Malaga in spring 2018, the remaining four aircraft will be taken over by the parent company.

The intention of SAS was to replace its own crews with cheaper crews outside Scandinavia in order to be able to better compete with other airlines. The airline does not have its own employees, instead they are employed by CAE , an aviation broker who started deploying backend staff in 2017.

The Swedish Pilots Union expressed its dissatisfaction with the operational structure of the new airline because it believes it is a breach of current employment contracts. The union also complained about the lack of coverage in the Scandinavian media. The Swedish cabin crew union also condemned the new company, stating that SAS founded the airline in order to "not pay decent salaries" to the cabin crew. Jonas Sjöstedt , the chairman of Vänsterpartiet , told a newspaper that the Swedish government had to stop the creation of the new airline, but Swedish Economy Minister Mikael Damberg told the same newspaper that “it is not a problem for the owner if the company decides to have bases to open abroad ”.

Due to delivery delays, SAS Ireland had to postpone its start until December 2017. The first flight took place on December 20, 2017 from Copenhagen to London Heathrow.

In the summer of 2018, many flights that were supposed to be operated by SAS Ireland were either canceled or operated by the parent company. At the same time, 26 pilots from SAS Ireland sent a letter to the corporate governance of the SAS Group criticizing working conditions and safety standards. The chief instructor at SAS Ireland resigned after being criticized for safety standards being too high. During the brief period the airline was operating, they saw the departure of some pilots, most of whom were still employed and actively sought new employment.
