Aer Arann Islands is an Irish airline based in Indreabhán and based at Connemara Airport .
history
Aer Arann Islands was founded in 1970 by James Coen and Ralph Langan as Aer Arann and started with flights between Galway and the three Aran Islands . At first it was the only aircraft to use a Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander . The island operations later moved to Connemara Airport, which is closer to the islands . In 1994, Pádraig Ó Céidigh bought the airline and began to expand the number of destination airports and the fleet. The company took over regional flights under the name Aer Arann Express with larger aircraft types, also outside of Ireland for, and in some cases also on behalf of Aer Lingus and flybe .
In 2002 the original company was spun off under the name Aer Arann Islands as a subsidiary for island flight operations.
The operation of Aer Arann Express, since 2011 Aer Arann Regional , was taken over by the British transport company Stobart Group in 2010 and has been continued under the name Stobart Air since 2014 .
After the airline had not won a tender for a four-year contract, the island flight operations threatened to cease on September 30, 2015. This was to be replaced by a helicopter service from Galway Airport . Protests over the airport change and the job losses led to this decision being reversed, so that Aer Arann Islands continued to fly to the islands.
