Monarch Airlines ceased operations in 2017. The information in italics refer to the last status before the end of operation. |
Monarch Airlines , also known as Monarch for short , was a British airline based in Luton . The company was owned by the investment firm Greybull Capital.
On October 2, 2017, the company filed for bankruptcy and ceased flight operations.
history
Monarch Airlines was founded as a subsidiary of Globus on June 1, 1967 by the Ticino brothers Sergio and Geo Mantegazza, the sons of the founder of the Swiss tourism group Globus , and on April 5, 1968 took charter flights with a Bristol 175 taken over by Caledonian Airways from London- Luton to Madrid-Barajas .
In 1971, Monarch Airlines entered the jet age with the purchase of a used Boeing 720 from Northwest Airlines for $ 1 million. From 1976 onwards, all machines in the fleet were jet planes .
In 1981 offices were opened at Gatwick , Glasgow International and Manchester airports . In 1985, Monarch applied for a scheduled airline license and on July 5, 1986, Monarch Crown Service was established as a scheduled airline division.
In 1999 the company received its first Airbus A330-200 and used it to fly long-haul charter flights in a two-class configuration . In 2002, Monarch Crown Service in Monarch Scheduled ( scheduled dt. Scheduled flight) renamed.
In September 2011, Monarch Airlines canceled an order placed in 2006 for six Boeing 787-8s , as short and medium-haul flights are to be increasingly served in the future. In recent years the company has modified its logo lettering and the color design of its aircraft several times.
In March 2013, Monarch Airlines opened its sixth UK base at Leeds Bradford International Airport .
On April 13, 2014, after a special flight from London Gatwick to Birmingham, Monarch Airlines was the last European airline to retire the passenger version of the Airbus A300 that it had operated since 1990. The company also decommissioned its Boeing 757-200 by spring 2015 .
In August 2014 it was announced that Monarch will no longer offer charter flights from spring 2015, but will only operate scheduled flights in the low-cost segment. As part of this reorientation, long-haul flights, for example to Orlando and Goa, were also discontinued, and the Airbus A330-200 used for this purpose then left the fleet.
In autumn 2014 Sergio Mantegazza sold the financially troubled Monarch Airlines to the British investment company Greybull Capital, which belongs to the families of the brothers Nathaniel Jerome Meyohas and Marc Meyohas and Richard Perlhagen.
In October 2014, Monarch Airlines announced that it would switch its entire fleet to Boeing aircraft by 2020 . For this purpose, 30 Boeing 737 MAX 8s were ordered and 15 more options were given.
As announced, Monarch Airlines carried out its last charter flight on April 30, 2015 and at the same time the last flight with an Airbus A330-200.
After Greybull Capital and the previous owners had already invested five additional capital in the airline in the last six years, the fifth largest airline in the country at that time ceased all flight operations with immediate effect (so-called grounding ) in the early morning of October 2, 2017. . All tickets already booked lose their validity. The British government commissioned the aviation authority to find a solution for the repatriation of around 110,000 passengers who at the time of the grounding had lost their return flights as a result of the bankruptcy. In the past few years, Monarch has not been able to position itself against competition from low-cost airlines and sales talks that were most recently held with EasyJet , Norwegian and Wizz Air remained unsuccessful.
Destinations
Monarch Airlines served numerous European destinations from its five British bases in Gatwick, Manchester, Leeds, Luton and Birmingham, including mainly holiday destinations such as Fuerteventura , Antalya and Kos . Charter and long-haul flights have not been offered since spring 2015.
Since September 2012, Munich has also been the first destination in Germany to be flown to, and Friedrichshafen followed in December 2012 . In April 2013, all six routes to Germany were temporarily suspended. In the meantime, except for Munich-Birmingham, they have been resumed seasonally, but as of May 2015 all seasonal routes to Munich have been discontinued and since then only Friedrichshafen has been served. In the meantime, however, it has also become known that the route Manchester-Friedrichshafen has been discontinued as a result of the corporate reorganization, as has the flight route London-Friedrichshafen being restricted to a rotation.
