Orion Airways ( Orion for short on the outside ) was a short-lived British charter airline that ceased operations in 1960.

history

Orion Airways was founded on January 26, 1956 by Peter E. Palmer, a former Royal Air Force pilot . Initially, the company was based at Blackbushe Airport . Operations started on August 9, 1957 with a Vickers Viking ( aircraft registration G-AHOS , name: Sirius ). The company carried out national and international charter flights (ad-hoc charter and IT charter) as well as contract services for various British airlines (sub-charter). In the summer of 1958, the company owned an aircraft and employed five pilots and 13 other people. In April 1959, the company acquired another Vickers Viking (G-APAT) machine . At the end of 1959, including the Viking G-AGRS bought in July 1959, three machines were in use.

Orion Airways worked together with the airlines based in Blackbushe against the closure of the airport, which took place on May 31, 1960. On June 1, 1960, the company relocated flight operations and its headquarters to London Gatwick Airport . In the long term, Coventry Airport , which was still being expanded at the time, was to be used as the home airport. Orion Airways had owned a hangar in Coventry since 1957, where the company's aircraft were serviced and repaired.

In September 1960, the company applied for scheduled flight rights for routes departing from London Gatwick to Le Touquet , Frankfurt and Munich . Scheduled air traffic was to commence on January 1, 1961.

On November 7, 1960, Orion Airways ceased operations for economic reasons and was subsequently liquidated. The two remaining Vikings were added to Air Safaris ' fleet .
