Cayman Airways is the flag carrier of the Cayman Islands , based in George Town and based at Owen Roberts International Airport . Domestic flights operate under the Cayman Airways Express brand .

history

The predecessor company of Cayman Airways, Cayman Brac Airways , was founded in 1955 as a subsidiary of the national airline of Costa Rica , Lacsa , for passenger flights between the islands of Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac . The re-establishment as Cayman Airways took place after the takeover of 51% of the shares by the government of the Cayman Islands in 1968. Initially, as before, Douglas DC-3s were used for traffic within the Cayman Islands. In the same year a BAC 1-11 was leased for flights to Kingston . Flights to Miami were offered from 1972. In 1977 the company became fully owned by the Cayman Islands government. In the 1980s, Boeing 727 and Boeing 737-200 were procured; Gradually, numerous new flight connections to destinations in the United States, Central America and the Caribbean were established. In June 2008 and January 2009 the Boeing 737-200s were replaced by two more aircraft from the -300 series. The older aircraft left the fleet and were parked in Marana , Arizona, waiting for a future user as of July 2010 . The Boeing 737 MAX 8 , which was ordered in 2016 as the successor to the 737-300 that was to be retired, have now been partially delivered, but cannot be used for the time being due to the flight bans imposed after two crashes of this type .
