Grand Cayman is the largest of the three Cayman Islands in the Caribbean . It is about 197 square kilometers. In 2010, 52,740 of the 55,036 residents of the Cayman Islands lived on this island. A little more than half of them live in the capital, George Town .

The east of the island is less developed than the western part of the island, where George Town and Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM) are located. On the western bay is Seven Mile Beach , a long beach with coral sand, which became famous, among other things, from the film adaptation of the novel The Company . The rare blue iguana , also known as the Grand Cayman iguana, is endemic to the island .

In September 2004, drew Hurricane Ivan with Category 5 in about 50 km distance to Grand Cayman over, the latter one, with winds of up to 290 km / claimed several lives and destroyed 80% of the buildings on the island. It was the worst hurricane the island has experienced in 86 years.
