Season overview:
2004 Atlantic hurricane season

Hurricane Ivan was the ninth named tropical storm, the sixth hurricane and the fourth major hurricane of the 2004 Atlantic hurricane season. It formed as a tropical low on September 2 , became a tropical storm on September 3, and a hurricane on September 5 classified. He was of the Cape Verdean type and reached the highest possible level 5 on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale . Ivan achieved an unprecedented intensity just a few days after its creation (measured by the latitude of the area where it was created - category 4 at 10.6 ° north). The measured minimum core pressure of 910 hPa makes it the ninth strongest Atlantic hurricane since the weather records began. The estimated damage in the United States of 13 billion US dollars make it the fifth-most expensive hurricane in the United States.

Ivan hit Grenada around noon on September 7th with stage 3, killing 39 people and damaging 85% of all buildings on the island. As it developed to Category 5, it moved on across the Caribbean Sea , passed close to the coast of Jamaica and Grand Cayman , and touched the western tip of Cuba with his eye . It killed 20 people in Jamaica and damaged more than 80% of the buildings on Grand Cayman.

Ivan then moved across the eastern Gulf of Mexico , weakening into a still strong Category 3 hurricane in the process. His track then continued north-northeast and met at Gulf Shores ( Alabama ) on the US Gulf Coast. After his shore leave, Ivan caused torrential rains over the southeastern United States, turned east, looped south through Florida and was able to briefly intensify into a tropical storm over the Gulf of Mexico. This new tropical system moved to Louisiana and Texas , but caused minimal damage, including oil rig 23051 .

Ivan broke several hydrological records: he is said to have caused the highest ocean wave ever recorded. This wave had a height of at least 27 m, but could also have reached up to 40 m. In addition, Ivan is said to have the fastest seabed current of 2.25 m / s.

In spring 2005 the World Meteorological Organization removed the name Ivan from the list of names of tropical cyclones and will be replaced by the name Igor from 2010 .
