The Sangster International Airport ( IATA : MBJ ; ICAO : MKJS ) is the international passenger airport of Montego Bay in Jamaica and before the Norman Manley International Airport is the largest in the country. It was named after former Prime Minister Donald Sangster .

Airlines and Destinations

Many international airlines fly to the airport. British Airways and TUI Airways fly to British destinations, Sunwing Airlines to many Canadian destinations. Most airlines are US based and fly to US destinations. American Airlines , Delta Air Lines and United Airlines , among others, offer regular scheduled connections to Chicago, Washington, Boston, Phoenix, Philadelphia, New York-JFK, Atlanta, Detroit, Memphis and many more. From the German-speaking area, the airport is currently served by Condor from Frankfurt am Main and Eurowings from Cologne .

In the air freight business, Air Jamaica Cargo , FedEx , IBC Airways and Sunrise Airways fly to Miami, Kingston-Manley, Port-Au-Prince and other airports.

Incidents

  • On January 21, 1960, a Lockheed L-1049E Super Constellation of the Colombian airline Avianca ( aircraft registration number HK-177 ) was on the route from New York (USA) to Bogota (Colombia) when the plane crashed during the stopover in Montego Bay. When touching down very hard on the runway, the landing gear broke, causing the fuselage to hit the ground and the aircraft to burst into flames. Of the 46 inmates, 37 were killed.
