The Pan Island Expressway (abbreviation: PIE, Chinese : 泛 岛 高速公路; Pinyin : Fàndǎo Gāosù Gōnglù; Tamil : தீவு விரைவுச்சாலை; malay : Lebuhraya Rentas Pulau) is the oldest and longest expressway in Singapore. It is also currently Singapore's longest street. It stretches almost the entire length of the island and connects Tuas in the west with Singapore Changi Airport in the east. Its length is 42.8 kilometers.

history

Construction of the PIE began in 1964 and began in three phases: The first phase was to widen the streets - Whitley Road , Jalan Toa Payoh , Jalan Kolam Ayer and Paya Lebar Way . These routes were completed in 1969. The road with the historical markings from Whitley Road to Jalan Anak Bukit was built and completed in 1975.

Open the new road to Changi Airport was built until 1980. The fourth phase was not completed until 1981 on Corporation Road . After its completion, the expressway was only 35 kilometers long.

extension

The renovation and expansion of the Pan Iceland Expressway began in 1992 when two more highways were built simultaneously, namely the Kranji Expressway and the Ayer Rajah Expressway leading to the Tuas Checkpoint were extended PIE, which deals with the Nanyang Technological University and the Bahar Flyover crossing and ends at Tuas Flyover , was completed in 1995.

As traffic increased between PIE and KJE to Jurong Industrial Estate, the LTA upgraded the PIE from Tengah Flyover to Tuas Road to a four-lane expressway. The work started in March 2004 and ended in March 2006.

Beginning in July 2011, the PIE stretch from 6 Clementi Avenue to Adam Road, one of the main thoroughfares, was also expanded: The expansion work required the PIE to be enlarged by one lane in each direction and the structural expansion to include Eng Neo, Chantek and Anak Bukit Flyovers: The expanded parts were gradually opened to traffic from July 2013. Today the route from BKE to Adam Road is a 6-lane expressway.

Residents of the Anak Bukit Flyover can expect traffic relief with the implementation of noise barriers, which is an attempt to reduce traffic noise. Installation work will begin on August 13, 2014 and will be completed in October 2014. The noise barriers are designed to reduce the noise targeting the residents of Anak Bukit.

Work on building a vehicle underpass at PIE exit 26A is also starting. The new underpass replaces the old underpass of Jalan Anak Bukit. Once completed, motorists will be able to exit the expressway through the left lane towards Jalan Anak Bukit, which will improve the overall flow of traffic. So the Hua Guan Avenue (part) will be realigned and expanded into a two-lane street. Construction will start in the 2nd quarter of 2018 and be completed in the 4th quarter of 2021.
