Industrial site in Jurong

Jurong is a district of Singapore . Jurong is divided into two cities - Jurong East and Jurong West . Two districts are under construction - Jurong Innovation District and Tengah. There are several locations in Tengah - Tengah Garden, Tengah Plantation, Tengah Market Place, Tengah Forest Hill, Tengah Brickland, and Tengah Park.

Jurong is located in the west of the island and includes both residential and industrial areas, the campus of the Nanyang Technological University and tourist attractions like the Jurong Bird Park and the Chinese Garden. Large parts of Jurong have been artificially reclaimed by backfilling into the sea in recent years.

Jurong is also home to one of Singapore's ports, Jurong Port . Jurong Port is the port for breakbulk and conventional ships.

The Jurong district borders the Tuas district.

The most notable malls are IMM Building, Jurong Point, JCube, Jem, and Westgate, including the fancy Big Box . A shuttle bus usually ran in the shopping malls around Jurong Gateway. This was stopped on January 1, 2017 and replaced by the J-Walk introduced on November 23, 2014 and the 990 bus.

history

The most widespread were brick factories, also known as brickworks. The Jurong Brickworks was demolished in 2005 and by 2008 all brickworks and villages were gone.

In 1961, the Economic and Development Board (EDB) was set up to promote the industrialization of Singapore, and in the same year earthworks began for the construction and development of Jurong Industrial Park. A year later, in 1962, the then finance minister of Singapore helped, Goh Keng Swee , renamed NatSteel and the company is now a subsidiary of Tata Steel (India). At the time, many Singaporeans doubted the chances of success for Dr. Goh's ambitious plan to open up the area for industrialization and gave it the flattering nickname "Goh's Folly". However, they were quickly proven wrong when 24 factories (of various types) were established in 1963. Jurong Port started operations in May 1965.

In 1968, Jurong Town Corporation was established to direct and control the development of Jurong. At that time, a total of 14.78 square kilometers of commercial space had been prepared, of which 153 factories were fully functional and in operation and 46 more were being built and set up. As Singapore's economy continues to grow and develop at an ever faster pace, finding more space for newer companies and industries in the future is an omnipresent and constant challenge. Seven islands off Jurong's south coast have been amalgamated to create the 30 square kilometer Jurong Island, which is home to most of Singapore's oil, chemical and petrochemical plants, manufacturing industries and plants. Construction and development of Jurong Island began in the early 1990s and is expected to be completed by 2010 (as of 2016, much of the development work will be completed, some newer developments are about to begin or are ongoing). A number of heavy industrial companies and firms, such as DuPont and Teijin Polycarbonate, started operations there in the late 1990s. The Jurong Island Causeway is the only land connection from Singapore to Jurong Island. All forms of access to the island have been severely restricted since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks . All employees working on Jurong Island are required to have a security ID for entry and exit. The transport of cameras and other recording devices to the island is prohibited.

On October 12, 1978, a Greek oil tanker, Spyros, exploded at the Jurong shipyard, killing more than 70 people in the immediate vicinity. It was one of the worst incidents in Singapore after World War II .

The first low-rise buildings were built in Taman Jurong in 1963 and 1964, before moving towards Boon Lay in the 1970s. Jurong East and West development began in 1979 when land such as Taman Jurong, Boon Lay Place, Bukit Batok, Bukit Gombak, Hongkah, Teban Gardens, and Yuhua were built mainly due to the relocation of Hongkah and the surrounding villages. Boon Lay Place, Taman Jurong and Hong Kah founded Jurong West New Town. Yuhua , Teban Gardens, Bukit Batok and Bukit Gombak founded Jurong East New Town.

In 1982 Jurong West New Town began expanding as Jurong West Extension, realigning the PIE to cross the southern boundary of what is now NTU, while converting the former section to Jurong West Avenue 2 and renaming the original Upper Jurong Road to Jurong West Avenue 4. Pioneer Road was extended in a northerly direction from today's Upper Jurong Road as Pioneer Road North to the new PIE exit. This was the beginning of the development of the Jurong West Extension (Yunnan, Pioneer and Gek Poh). The N9 property was the first to be built and the N6 property was the last to be built in the early 2000s.

traffic

Jurong is well connected by the Ayer Rajah Expressway and Pan Island Expressway, as well as the Kranji Expressway . The Ayer Rajah Expressway is connected to the Tuas Second Link.

Jurong is also connected to the MRT which has multiple stations: Jurong East , Chinese Garden, Lakeside, Boon Lay, Pioneer, Joo Koon, Gul Circle, Sierra, Yosemite and Tuas Plaza. Going forward, the Jurong Region Line will also be connected to locations such as Nanyang Technological University ( Nanyang Gateway , Nanyang Crescent, and Peng Kang Hill ), Jurong Island, Jurong Pier, Tengah, and Choa Chu Kang, including Jurong Gateway. The Jurong Region Line is expected to be operational from 2026 to 2028.

Jurong East was selected as the endpoint for the high-speed rail project before Mahathir Mohamad's plans were postponed in May 2018. The high-speed railway prompted the acquisition of Jurong Country Club and Raffles Country Club along with the en bloc of Ivory Heights .

Tuas is connected to the Malaysian mainland by a bridge ("Second Link") .

politics

In the 1959 general election, Jurong was an independent political constituency. Chia Thye Poh represented the constituency in Parliament between 1963 and 1966. Then in 1976 the Boon Lay constituency and in 1984 the Hong Kah constituency were split up, with four separate constituencies being formed. The Hong Kah constituency eventually became a constituency that consisted of Nanyang, Hong Kah, Gek Poh, and Bukit Batok in 1988. Teban Gardens, Pioneer, Yuhua, and Taman Jurong were under the Bukit Timah constituency and the N9 region of Nanyang was under the Jurong constituency.

In 2001 there were major changes in Jurong's political constituencies. Boon Lay Constituency, along with Teban Gardens and Pioneer, have been added to the expanded West Coast GRC. The Hong Kah constituency was redesigned to include the cities of Chua Chu Kang (Limbang and Yew Tee) and Bukit Gombak, and only Nanyang and Gek Poh remained in the constituency, this time including the N9 region of Nanyang. Jurong constituency was abolished. Hong Kah and Bukit Batok were combined with Yuhua and Taman Jurong in the newly created Jurong GRC. Because of this, Jurong's entire political system was changed with 3 GRCs.

Still, the Tengah area became an SMC (Hong Kah North) in 2011, while Yuhua and Pioneer eventually became SMCs.
