Toa Payoh Town Center

Toa Payoh (simplified Chinese: 大巴窑; traditional Chinese: 大巴窯, Tamil: தோ பாயோ) is a planning area and a mature residential city in the northern part of the central region of Singapore. The Toa Payoh planning area borders Bishan and Serangoon to the north, the central water catchment area to the northwest, Kallang to the south, Geylang to the southeast , Novena to the west and Hougang to the east. Toa Payoh New Town is located in the eastern part of the Toa Payoh Planning Area. The latter occupies a much larger area and includes estates such as Potong Pasir and Bidadari.

history

Toa Payoh is an extensive and notorious wetland area. Most of the squatters were involved in the breeding and rearing of pigs. The others were street vendors, factory workers, mechanics, or household helpers.

The squatters were moved out in 1962 because of increased compensation rates and other practical government incentives. The clearance work could begin and redevelopment began in early 1964. Toa Payoh is a second new town after Queenstown to be built by the Housing and Development Board .

In addition, Queen had Elizabeth II . Visited the area in 1972 (Blk 53, Toa Payoh) and 2006 (Blk 7, Toa Payoh Lorong 7).

Infrastructure

The city center was the first prototype in Singapore. It is surrounded by separate parts of the city, each with their own shopping facilities and community centers, and separated by a network of vehicle roads and generous open spaces. The result, as in the English New Towns of the 1950s, is that residents do not travel to the city center, but rather shop in their neighborhood. When traveling, use the MRT system, Toa Payoh and Braddell MRT Stations, or public buses at Toa Payoh Bus Interchange into town. There are three condos in Toa Payoh; the notable one is Trellis Towers.

The HDB Hub commercial development in Toa Payoh city center was completed in 2002. The Housing and Development Board moved its headquarters from its Bukit Merah premises to the HDB Hub on June 10, 2002. The HDB Hub consists of two wings, an atrium, four commercial building blocks, a leisure and learning center and a three-story underground car park. The building also houses Singapore's first fully air-conditioned Toa Payoh Bus Interchange and integrates it with the existing Toa Payoh MRT station .

The MRT station opened on November 7, 1987. It is the first station to start operating on August 5, 1985. It is the first subway station in the world to be equipped with platform doors.

Toa Payoh Town Park

The Housing and Development Board decided to reserve a large area of Toa Payoh for a garden park, Toa Payoh Town Garden, despite the pressure on the land to live there. It was completed in 1973. The notable feature of a city garden was a popular location for outdoor wedding photos.

Toa Payoh Town Garden was partially closed in 1999 to make way for a temporary bus exchange. After the first integrated transport hub was built, it was renamed Toa Payoh Town Park together with SAFRA Toa Payoh.

politics

Most of Toa Payoh's areas are in the Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC constituency , with the exception of a portion of Lorong 8 Toa Payoh which is in the Potong Pasir constituency. The section that is part of the Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC is divided into three divisions, mainly Toa Payoh Central , Toa Payoh East-Novena, and Toa Payoh West-Balestier . Members of Parliament are Defense Minister Ng Eng Hen, Saktiandi Supaat and Chee Hong Tat of the People's Action Party , the ruling party of Singapore. The Rep for Potong Pasir SMC is Sitoh Yih Pin from the People's Action Party. Before 1988, there were many constituencies around Toa Payoh. These include Boon Teck, Khe Bong, Kim Keat, and Kuo Chuan, when the surrounding areas were developed until 1976. They were formed into Toa Payoh GRC in 1988 before being replaced by the current GRC in 1997.
