The Durham Tees Valley Airport is the airport of the British city of Durham in northern England . In 2008 655,017 passengers were handled here. As a result of the international financial crisis , the number of passengers dropped to 290,000 in 2009, they fell by more than half and continued to fall in the following years.

The airport is located 8.7 km southeast of Darlington , approximately 16 km southwest of Middlesbrough and 39 km south of Durham. The airport serves County Durham and parts of North Yorkshire , as well as Middleton St George.
history
RAF Middleton St. George
The current airport was originally built as 1,941 military airfield of the Bomber Command of the Royal Air Force opened (RAF). Initially known as the RAF Goosepool , the name was changed to Royal Air Force Station Middleton St. George , RAF Middleton St. George for short . The base was placed under the 6th Group of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) in 1943 . The types of bombers used by the RAF and RCAF during the war were the Whitley , Wellington , Halifax and Lancaster .
In the two decades after the end of the war, the RAF used the base as a training facility, the types of aircraft flown were Meteor , Hunter , Javelin and Lightning , among others .
Durham Tees Valley Airport
The RAF gave up the station in 1963/1964. It was converted into a civil airfield and opened in 1966 as Teesside International Airport . It was named Durham Tees Valley Airport in 2004. Originally owned by various county councils , the airport is now 75% owned by Peel Investments (DTVA) Limited .

Durham Tees Valley has regular scheduled connections to Aberdeen and Southampton with Eastern Airways and to Amsterdam with KLM Cityhopper .

Teesside Airport train station
The airport train station is on the Tees Valley Line and is a scheduled stop for two trains every Sunday. Northern Rail , which operates the station and the route, recorded 18 passengers using the station in the 2010/2011 financial year . In the 2011/2012 financial year, 14 passengers used the station. The airport Teesside station is one of the five least used stations in the route network of the English railways. The station is a 15-minute walk from the airport and there are plans to replace it with a stop closer to the airport as part of the expansion of the railway line to the Tees Valley Metro .
