Teesside Airport train station serves Durham Tees Valley Airport in the Borough of Darlington or in the ceremonial county of Durham , England. With eight passengers getting on and off, it was the least used station in the UK between April 2013 and March 2014.

history

The station is on the original line of the Stockton and Darlington Railway , the oldest passenger railroad in the world, 5.5 miles from Darlington South Junction. It was opened by British Rail on October 3rd, 1971, and has two platforms that can accommodate a four-car train. The airport was renamed Durham Tees Valley Airport in 2004 , but the station still bears the old name. In 2007 Northern Rail put up new signs with the name Teesside Airport , but at National Rail the station is still called Tees-side Airport , as on the old signs.

The station is on the Tees Valley Line and is operated by Northern Rail and only served by one train in each direction on Sundays. The route is served by many more trains, but these do not stop at Teesside Airport. The airport itself is a 15-minute walk away and there is also a lack of disabled access, both reasons why the train station is not used often. In the past, the station had better connections (the 1986 British Rail timetable shows an hourly train every day of the week), but since the early 1990s the service has been scaled back to a minimal parliamentary offer to avoid the formal cost of closure to escape.

Map showing the location of the station

On Saturday, October 24, 2009, a group of 26 people took the only scheduled trains to the station to point out the existence of the station and its poor connections. They asked those responsible to move the train station 500 meters closer to the airport terminal.

On October 27, 2010, the station was featured in the BBC Radio 4 report The Ghost Trains of Old England , mentioning the campaign and the fact that there is a working phone. In addition, the thesis was raised that many of the tickets that would be sold for journeys to or from this station were bought by railway enthusiasts as souvenirs and not used for actual journeys.

Other means of transport

There used to be a well-frequented connection to the airport with the Sky Express bus to Middlesbrough and Darlington. In 2011, the line to Middlesbrough was discontinued after Borough Stockton declined further financial support, the line to Darlington and Hurworth was integrated into the Arriva bus line 12. After even fewer passengers used this line in 2012, the last trips to the airport were also given up.

future

The station's railway line, the Tees Valley Line, is one of the lines to be modernized as part of the Tees Valley Metro project . The plan is to move the station closer to the airport. Then an operation with four trains per hour to Darlington and Saltburn will be offered.
