The George Best Belfast City Airport is, after Belfast International Airport , the smaller and closer to the city of the two civil airports in the Northern Irish capital, Belfast . The airport is about five kilometers east of the city center on the large port area . The Bombardier company produces there.

history

On May 22, 2006, Belfast City Airport was renamed George Best Belfast City Airport . Belfast is honoring the world-class soccer player George Best , who died in 2005 and who would have celebrated his 60th birthday on this day.

George Best Belfast City Airport has numerous connections within Great Britain as well as to holiday destinations in Spain . The largest local company is Flybe , which operates a base here and flies to London , Birmingham , Cardiff , Manchester and Southampton , for example . Seasonally, German-speaking destinations are also served directly as part of charter flights to ski areas with Memmingen and Salzburg . bmibaby closed its Belfast base in June 2012 after less than a year.

In addition to Flybe, Aer Lingus flies to Dublin and destinations on the Iberian Peninsula. With British Airways , KLM and Brussels Airlines , there is a connection to European air hubs. Citywing also offers flights to the Isle of Man .
