Band history

The beginnings (1986–1989)

In 1986, schoolmates John Rzeznik and Robby Takac founded the Sex Maggots together with George Tutuska in Buffalo , initially a pure cover band. However, when the band began to write more and more of their own lyrics and compose their own pieces, they changed their band name to The Goo Goo Dolls , as the original name was obscene and caused problems. The band was inspired by an issue of True Detective magazine that featured an ad for a toy called Goo Goo Doll . Looking back on the success of the band, John Rzeznik confessed in an interview: "If I had been able to think about it five minutes longer, I would definitely have chosen a different name." In the first few years, the band was considered a pure punk band , whose style suited the group The Replacements was ajar. Because of this, they often received criticism. At that time the bassist Robby Takac sang a large part of the songs; Over the years this was increasingly taken over by John Rzeznik. While the band's music was punk rock on the early albums, their style changed over time to alternative rock 'n' roll .

First success and breakthrough (1990-2000)

The band had a minor hit in 1990 with the album Hold Me Up , which became a hit on American college radio stations. The album Superstar Car Wash was released three years later . Due to an argument with lead singer John Rzeznik, drummer George Tutuska left. A short time later, Mike Malinin replaced him. The Goo Goo Dolls had their first major chart success in 1995 with the title Name from the album A Boy Named Goo , which rose to number 5 in the US Top 100. After her film soundtracks I'm Awake Now ( Nightmare on Elm Street 6 ) and Lazy Eye ( Batman & Robin ), John Rzeznik wrote the ballad Iris for the film City of Angels in 1998 , which was also featured on the album Dizzy Up the Girl . This made the band their commercial breakthrough in America and Europe; Iris only rose to number 9 in the US singles charts, but was number 1 in the radio airplay charts for 18 weeks , setting a new record. This song was also nominated for three Grammys , but couldn't win any of them. The singles Slide , Black Balloon , Dizzy and Broadway from the album Dizzy Up the Girl also managed to place themselves in the charts.

Seventh album and live DVD (2001-2004)

During this time, the Goo Goo Dolls also filled larger arenas and were known to almost every child in America (thanks to performances at Nickelodeon and Sesame Street ). In 2001 What I Learned About Ego, Opinion, Art & Commerce , a collection of previously published songs that had been digitally post-processed, was released. This album should represent a cross-section of the entire career: from the first days as a punk band to the mainstream band. However, Iris was not included on this record. In 2002 the album Gutterflower was released , from which the singles Here Is Gone , Sympathy and Big Machine could also place in the charts. However, the album was not as successful as Dizzy Up the Girl . Together with Fred Durst they played the Pink Floyd song Wish You Were Here for the victims of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 under the motto "Gift to Heroes". In 2004 a live album was recorded in Buffalo during monsoon rains, on which all of the band's hits were performed live. A DVD and the single Give a Little Bit , a cover version of the Supertramp song , were also released for this concert . This live album, Live in Buffalo , was released in North America in 2004 and later in Europe in 2005.

The Greatest Hits and three albums (2005-2013)

In 2005, the single Better Days was released in the USA as a harbinger of their album Let Love In , which was released in April 2006. From this the songs Stay With You and Let Love In were extracted. In February 2007 a special edition of Let Love In was released with an additional DVD. In addition, the Goo Goo Dolls are featured on the soundtrack of the film Transformers with the song Before It's Too Late , which was previously only released on the album Greatest Hits Volume 1 (2007) . The following year, Volume 2 was another compilation with B-Sides and some cover songs. In September 2008, the release of their single Real followed . On September 3, 2010, after four years, the album Something For The Rest Of Us was released , which landed at number 7 on the album charts in the USA. Up until now, Home and Notbroken were extracted from this , only as a download. In 2013 the album Magnetic was released on CD and vinyl as well as the singles Rebel Beat , Come To Me and Caught In The Storm .

Anniversary and album No. 11 (2014–2016)

In 2014, drummer Mike Malinin announced that he was leaving the band. In 2015, the song If The World Turned Upside Down , written by Take-That front man Gary Barlow , appeared on the soundtrack for the musical Finding Neverland . On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the release of the album A Boy Named Goo , a 20th Anniversary Edition with seven additional live tracks will be released on November 27, 2015 . On May 6, 2016 the Goo Goo Dolls will release their eleventh studio album called Boxes . The single So Alive was released on April 8th . In the US, the album reached number 27 and only stayed in the charts for a week. It was the first album that has not made it into the American top 10 since 1998 ( Dizzy Up The Girl ).

On the so-called Record Store Day (May 22, 2017) the band released a vinyl box limited to 1000 copies under the name Pick Pockets, Petty Thieves, Tiny Victories (1987-1995) , which released their first five studio albums Goo Goo Dolls , Jed , Includes Hold Me Up , Superstar Car Wash and A Boy Named Goo for the first time on vinyl. Also in 2017 the EP You Shoud Be Happy was released with four new songs and a remix of the title track of their last album Boxes . Second limited vinyl box and twelfth album (2019 to date)

At the beginning of 2019, the Goo Goo Dolls announced on Twitter that they would be working on their twelfth studio album, which will be released later this year. Just like two years ago, a vinyl box limited to 1000 copies was released on Record Store Day (April 13, 2019), this time under the name Topography . It contains all studio albums from 1998 to 2013 ( Dizzy Up the Girl , Gutterflower , Let Love In , Something For The Rest Of Us and Magnetic ). On June 21, 2019, they released Miracle Pill, the first single from the twelfth studio album of the same name, which was released on September 13. From this the songs Money, Fame & Fortune and Indestructible were also extracted as singles. The album only landed at number 92 in the US, making it the band's worst-placed album since 1993. On August 24, 2020, they announced their first Christmas album under the name It's Christmas All Over for October 30.
