Dizzy Up the Girl is the sixth studio album by the American rock band Goo Goo Dolls . It was released on September 22, 1998 by Warner Music Group and brought the band the international breakthrough thanks to the hit singles Iris , Slide , Broadway and Black Balloon .

useful information

Bassist Robby Takak took over the lead vocals for the songs January Friend , Amigone and Extra Pale . With almost 3 million albums sold, Dizzy Up the Girl is the band's most successful to date. While the Goo Goo Dolls were still a pure punk band at the beginning of their career , this album can be classified more in the area of alternative rock or post-grunge . The two most successful singles, Iris and Slide , are ballads from the pop-rock line. The band is particularly defined by the single Iris , which is part of the soundtrack of the film City of Angels . The US magazine Billboard was Iris voted No. 1 on the 100 best pop songs of the decade.

Reviews

Alexander Cordas from laut.de sees the only point of criticism in the album as the “hit potential of every single single. Each of the 14 little songs is so sweet and sticky that it immediately sticks in the ear canal. "Dizzy Up The Girl" is one of those records that you can't get out of your CD player for two weeks, but then probably only seldom put in. "Musikexpress.de awarded 5 stars and certifies the album" powerful, energetic songwriting, grippy Roar choruses and, above all, loads of hits. ”For rockhard.de it is“ no wonder that the band is showered with platinum awards in America ”, because“ lively college rockers like “Dizzy”, “Broadway” or “Full Forever” "Shine with beautiful melodies and invite you to sing along with their catchy choruses." Allmusic.com awarded 4 out of 5 possible stars.

Singles

The single Dizzy just missed the official Billboard Top 100 charts in the US at number 108. Even though Iris became a radio hit worldwide, all of the songs missed the German single charts. Iris is still very successful, especially in Great Britain, where the single regularly reaches chart positions. In 2011 the Goo Goo Dolls were able to reach the top 10 of the UK charts for the first time. In 2013, when the album Magnetic was released , Iris climbed to number 12. In the US, Iris was at the top of the airplay charts for 18 consecutive weeks . This record is still unbroken today.
