John Joseph Theodore Rzeznik (* 5. December 1965 in Buffalo ) is a Polish-born, American music producer , songwriter and singer and lead guitarist and frontman of alternative rock - band Goo Goo Dolls .

As a founding member, he has already released eleven studio albums with the band.

childhood

John Rzeznik was born in Buffalo , USA . He was one of five children of the parents Joseph and Edith Rzeznik (pronunciation: Scheschnik , meaning: Rzeźnik - 'butcher' in Polish ). His father worked as a postman, his mother was a school teacher. Both parents were great music lovers and played the clarinet and flute . John was raised strictly Catholic . His father died of a diabetic coma at the age of 55 when he was only 14 years old. Six months later, his mother died after a sudden heart attack . Then the growing orphan up with his older sisters Phyllis, Fran, Glad and Kate. This time shaped him very much, which is why he made the decision to devote his life to music and the guitar.

Beginnings

As a member of the band The Beaumonts , a band of Robby Takac's cousin , he gained his first experience. After leaving this band he founded his own band with his school friend Robby Takac, which was initially called The Sex Maggots . Shortly after the founding, George Tutuska also joined as a drummer. At the beginning a pure punk band, over time their style changed to alternative rock . However, when the band was denied an appearance in a club because of the name, it was decided to change it. They came up with their current name through an advertisement in a magazine. John Rzeznik himself said in an interview: "If I had been able to think about 5 minutes longer, I would definitely have chosen a different name".

In the first albums that were released under the Celluloid label with the title "The goo goo dolls", Robby Takac was the front man of the band. However, since John Rzeznik's vocals were more popular, he took over this part later. Since the band caused a sensation with this album, the label Metal Blade became aware of them, with which they produced the next five albums. During the next five years the band toured several times, produced other albums, and its members kept themselves afloat with regular work.

Other activities

John Rzeznik also wrote some movie songs: Always Know Where You Are and I'm Still Here for the Disney movie Treasure Planet . As a songwriter, he wrote some songs and lyrics for others like Andy Stochansky and Ryan Cabrera , Blessid Union of Souls , Anastacia , Zoe Scott and a few more musicians.

From October to December 2007, alongside Sheila E. and the Australian idol and marketing manager Ian Dickson , he was a jury member of the series “Next Great American Band”, a show based on Germany is looking for the superstar .

On June 19, 2008, he was awarded the Hal David Starlight Award and entered the Songwriters Hall of Fame .
