Anastacia Lyn Newkirk [ ænəsˈteɪʒə ] (born September 17, 1968 in Chicago ) is an American singer and songwriter .

Private life

Anastacia's mother is Broadway actress Diane Hurley and her father is singer Robert Newkirk. She has an older sister and a younger brother. After their parents' divorce, she moved with her mother and siblings to New York City , where she first attended the Professional Children's School in Manhattan .

She had to deal with limitations from a young age due to Crohn's disease , a chronic inflammatory bowel disease . Regardless of this, she developed a great interest in dance as a teenager. She received engagements as a dancer in 1988 for the music videos for Everybody Get Up and Twist and Shout by Salt 'n' Pepa and later at Club MTV . She began training as a hairdresser and worked as a studio singer for artists such as Jamie Foxx and Omar Sosa .

She was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2003 and was treated with surgery in February 2003 and radiation . In April 2007, she married her bodyguard Wayne Newton in Mexico. In April 2010, it was announced that she had filed for divorce from Newton. Until the end of August 2008, she kept her real age secret by giving the media 1973 as the year of birth. In February 2013, she canceled her planned European tour because she was again diagnosed with breast cancer. She has since announced that she had undergone a bilateral mastectomy to prevent the disease from recurring.

Musical career

Anastacia (2005)

In 1998 Anastacia took part in the singing competition The Cut of the TV channel MTV and made it to the finals. Although she didn't win the trophy, her performance made such a strong impression that major labels wanted to sign her as well. She chose Daylight Records, a sub-label of SonyMusics Epic Records . Early in her career she stood out for a style that set her apart from mainstream pop culture. As she wore glasses , she did without contact lenses and wore various tinted and non-tinted glasses models. Since her cancer, she has mostly appeared in public without glasses.

In 2000, Not That Kind was their first studio album. Not least thanks to the top ten hit I'm Outta Love , the album climbed to number one in the album charts in Australia , the Netherlands and Switzerland and sold more than five million times worldwide. Other, albeit less successful, single releases were Not That Kind , Cowboys & Kisses and the limited promo single Made for Lovin 'You .

In November 2001 the second album followed with Freak of Nature . With seven million copies sold, it exceeded the success of the debut album, took first place in Germany and produced two more German top ten hits with the first two releases Paid My Dues and One Day in Your Life . After the release of the two songs Why'd You Lie to Me and You'll Never Be Alone , she contributed Boom, the official title song for the soccer World Cup in Japan and South Korea in 2002, which was only moderately successful. In early 2003 she was featured on the soundtrack to the hit Chicago movie with Love Is a Crime .

After a break of more than a year due to illness, she returned to the music business in 2004 with the album Anastacia, simply named after her . The album - some songs were written during her hospital stay - was awarded five times platinum in Germany alone and reached number one in the German album annual charts in 2004. The first two releases Sick and Tired and Left Outside Alone both took second place in Germany and also placed themselves on position 13 and 17 of the German single year charts 2004. She also worked as a presenter on the MTV casting show A Cut in 2005 - the name is a combination of "A (nastacia)" and "(The) Cut". The aim was to create a band to find that as a support act to play for one of their concerts in Germany that summer.

In autumn 2004 she performed her first major European tour Live at Last . She played in sold-out halls in many countries, including Germany, which meant that the tour was extended by a few concerts in spring and summer 2005. In autumn 2005 she released her first greatest hits album Pieces of a Dream including the top 20 hit Everything Burns (featuring Ben Moody ) and the title single. The third single I Belong to You (Il Ritmo Della Passione) , a duet with the Italian singer Eros Ramazzotti , became the two artists' first number one hit in Germany.

Anastacia (2014)

After a long break, their new album Heavy Rotation was released in Germany in October 2008 . The stylistic change compared to its predecessors caused a mixed response from the fans. The previously released single I Can Feel You also fell short of expectations with its Top 30 entry. In November 2009, Here Come the Girls started , a joint tour through Great Britain with the singers Chaka Khan and Lulu . The program contained both own hits and cover versions. A year later the tour continued, this time with a concert in Ireland. Instead of Chaka Khan, Heather Small , the lead singer of the band M People, sang . In November 2012, Anastacia released a cover album called It's a Man's World . She then covered rock classics by Led Zeppelin , AC / DC , Guns N 'Roses and the Foo Fighters, among others . In December 2012 she toured Germany with Night of the Proms .

In April 2014, it published with Stupid Little Things , the first single from her next studio album Resurrection ( Engl. For resurrection), which was published in May, 2014. The video for the song was shot in January 2014 in California and Nevada ; Directed by Marcus Sternberg . The album reached number 9 in Great Britain. In the same year she was a member of the jury for the Rising Star singing competition broadcast by RTL . In Italy, Anastacia achieved a top ten placement for the sixth time, and in the UK for the fifth time. It reached the top 5 in both Germany and Switzerland. In April 2014, it received the German “Rainbow Prize” for charity and entertainment.

Missing breakthrough in home USA

Although Anastacia was born in the USA and, with her "black" sounding soul voice and her songs, has good prerequisites for a successful career in the USA, she has not yet made her big breakthrough there. She achieved the highest ranking with her debut single I'm Outta Love , which reached number 92 on the US Billboard singles chart .

Social engagement and fashion sales

In 2003, after her breast cancer operation, she founded the Anastacia Fund . He is part of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation founded by Estée Lauder in 1993 . She says she set up the foundation to encourage other women and to contribute to early cancer detection. She regularly collects money for the organization, for example the proceeds from the fourth release Heavy on My Heart from her album Anastacia .

At the end of 2005 she brought out a charity collection under the name Make a Difference at the s.Oliver fashion house . The proceeds went to an aid organization to support earthquake victims in Pakistan . In December 2006 she brought out another three T-shirts, the proceeds of which went to the Anastacia Fund . In August 2006, her first clothing line came onto the market under the name Anastacia by s.Oliver , which was largely designed by her and sold for four years. The distribution of their perfume series Anastacia Resurrection was stopped in 2008.
