On Freak of Nature , the successor to the debut Not That Kind , which has already been successful in many countries , Anastacia continued her mix of 1980s-style R&B , funk , soul and pop , with the ballads taking a slightly larger share of the pieces this time Albums. Above all, the up-tempo piece Paid My Dues developed into a Europe-wide hit, and One Day in Your Life was also a successful single.

José F. Promis from Allmusic wrote that the album was "full of raw emotion, power, and musicality" and managed to be better than its predecessor. He gave it 4 out of 5 stars. Anastacia became a little more successful with Freak of Nature in the USA, but the album was the last to be released there. It reached number 27 on the Billboard 200 and topped many European countries, including Germany , Switzerland , the Netherlands , Denmark and Sweden . In Austria it came in second.
