The German Sustainability Award (DNP) is an award for sustainability .

The award recognizes exemplary sustainability achievements in business, municipalities and research. With five competitions, over 800 applicants and 2,000 guests at the closing event, it is the largest award of its kind in Europe. The prize has been awarded annually since 2008 by the German Sustainability Award Foundation, in cooperation with the Federal Government, the Council for Sustainable Development , municipal umbrella organizations, business associations, civil society organizations and research institutions. Its aim is to encourage business and the municipal sector to act sustainably and to anchor the principles of sustainable development better in public perception. It is intended to show that acting responsibly not only helps to solve social and ecological problems on a global or local scale, but can also increase profitability and competitiveness.

Honorary prizes are awarded for humanitarian and ecological commitment. The initiator of the award is the television journalist and lawyer Stefan Schulze-Hausmann .

competition

Germany's most sustainable companies, cities and municipalities are determined through a competition. Participants in the competition qualify by filling out an electronic questionnaire that was developed with various methodological partners , including Difu , Wuppertal Institute and Berlin University of Economics and Law . The methodology aims at maximum transparency, keeps the processing effort for the applicants manageable and should do justice to the complexity of sustainability management in large and small units.

jury

The jury of experts, chaired by Günther Bachmann, General Secretary of the Council for Sustainable Development, selects the winners and finalists of the German Sustainability Award every year. This committee - appointed annually by the Board of Trustees of the German Sustainability Award Foundation - brings perspectives from business, research, civil society and politics into the decision-making process.

Categories

German Sustainability Award for Companies The German Sustainability Award is given to companies that successfully meet ecological and social challenges with their products and services and thus use sustainability as an economic opportunity. The categories range from small and medium-sized to medium-sized and large companies. Since 2014, companies have also had the opportunity to apply for the “Resource Efficiency” special prize. Outstanding strategies and measures along the entire value chain that contribute to minimizing the use of materials, energy, space and water as well as innovative recycling and cycle concepts are evaluated. Germany's most sustainable brands distinguish company or product brands that take sustainability aspects into account in brand management in a special way.

German Sustainability Award for Cities and Communities Since 2012, the German Sustainability Award has also been given to “Germany's most sustainable cities and communities”. The award is given to municipalities that operate comprehensive sustainable urban development within the scope of their economic possibilities and have implemented successful sustainability projects in the important areas of administration. In the awarding process, financially weak applicants who act sustainably despite limited opportunities are also considered. Since the first competition in 2012, the underlying methodology has been continuously developed to take into account progress in the field of municipal sustainability, practical experience and feedback from the participants. For the fifth anniversary in 2016, the questionnaire was comprehensively revised in order to significantly reduce the processing effort. The main methodological innovation is the introduction of a second competition phase for the top cities and municipalities in each category. The award winners - one large city, one medium-sized city and one small town or municipality - receive project-related funding of 35,000 euros each from the Allianz Umweltstiftung .

The German Sustainability Research Award In cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the award honors researchers and research teams who deal with the transformation process towards a “green economy” in their work. The award underscores the outstanding role of science in the change towards more sustainable living and business.

The DGNB “Sustainable Building” Award The DGNB “Sustainable Building” award honors outstanding and exemplary achievements in architecture, the quality of which is demonstrated beyond sustainability, in particular in high aesthetic standards and innovative solutions. The prize is awarded by the German Sustainability Award Foundation. V. in cooperation with the German Sustainable Building Council - DGNB e. V.

The BMUB special award “PartnerStadt - Sustainable Infrastructures Local and Global” With the special award “PartnerStadt - Sustainable Infrastructures Local and Global”, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) honors cities and communities that - either themselves or through their municipal companies - support the creation of sustainable infrastructures in countries with a high need for restructuring and thus also contribute to German environmental technologies being in international demand.

The Next Economy Award (NEA)

Since 2015, the German Sustainability Award Foundation has been awarding the first national award for startups that focus on sustainability and the green economy, the Next Economy Award, in cooperation with the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy , the Council for Sustainable Development and the DIHK . In various subject areas, the NEA honors founders who use innovative business models to ensure social and ecological improvements and thus the “next” who want to help shape a more sustainable economy. The final of the competition will be played in a live pitch in front of the jury.
