history

The company was founded in 1959 by Kazuo Inamori as Kyoto Ceramics and has also been represented on the European market since the early 1970s. In 1969, the US subsidiary started operations.

In 1983 the group was renamed from Kyoto Ceramic Co., Ltd. to Kyocera Corporation . In the same year, Kyocera merged with Yashica Camera Co., Ltd. This also included rights of use to the traditional Contax brand , which still belongs to Carl Zeiss AG, in the Kyocera Group's product portfolio. The cameras continued to be sold under the “Contax” and “Yashica” brands. From 1996 to 2004 digital cameras were also offered under the name "Kyocera".

In 1985 the company founder donated the renowned Kyoto Prize in the categories of high technology, basic research, and art and philosophy.

In 1990 the AVX Corporation was taken over.

In August 1999, the group took over the Golden Genesis Company of Scottsdale , Arizona , renamed Kyocera Solar, Inc. (KSI), and Mita Industrial Co., Ltd. in 2000 . In 2002 Toshiba Chemical Corp. reorganized and incorporated into Kyocera Chemical Corp. transformed.

In April 2005, Kyocera announced that it would withdraw from the camera business. In September 2005, the delivery of Contax cameras and accessories was discontinued.

Kyocera was the main sponsor of the first division football club Borussia Mönchengladbach until June 30, 2009 . The company took over the German company Triumph-Adler in January 2009 , the CEYONIQ group in October 2015 and the software manufacturer Optimal Systems in spring 2020.

Innovations were the small image mirror reflex cameras "CONTAX RTS III" and "CONTAX AX". Perforated ceramic film pressure plates were used there for the first time, in which the film was sucked in by negative pressure while it was being picked up. With the AX, the autofocus function was implemented for the first time by means of a movable film layer mounted in ceramic in the camera housing. This meant that all existing manual lenses could continue to be used.

In 1982, Isuzu introduced a passenger car with a three-cylinder diesel engine built by Kyocera. Due to the high heat resistance of the ceramic components, the engine neither required a water cooler nor cooling fins on the cylinder head for air cooling.
