Isuzu ( Japanese い す ゞ 自動 車 株式会社 , Isuzu Jidōsha Kabushiki-gaisha , English Isuzu Motors Limited ), listed in the Nikkei 225 , is a Japanese vehicle manufacturer.
history
The company was founded in 1916 as a cooperation between the Ishikawajima shipyard and the Tokyo gas and electricity companies . In 1918, Isuzu acquired a license from the British manufacturer Wolseley and sold its vehicles in East Asia. In 1922, Isuzu began producing the Wolseley A-9 itself. Later a truck was developed. In 1929 the automotive sector from Ishikawajima was spun off as Ishikawajima Jidōsha Seisakusho ( 石 川島 自動 車 製作 所 , "Ishikawajima engine works"). In 1934 the Dōwa Jidōsha Kōgyō KK ( 同 和 自動 車 工業 株式会社 ), which was founded in Hsing-king and had been part of the Manshū Jūkōgyō Kaihatsu since 1938 , was given technical support. The annual production target was 5,000 vehicles, especially armored vehicles, the original design of which had been licensed by the British Crossley Motors . From 1940 passenger cars emerged as Isuzu. In 1949 the company was given the name Isuzu after it was used as a brand name as early as 1934 and refers to the river of the same name at the Ise shrine .
From 1953, the Isuzu built the Hillman Minx under license from Rootes as the Isuzu Minx. The first in-house developments of the Japanese company after the separation from the British Rootes Group were the Bellel , Bellett , 117 Coupé and Florian models in the 1960s . In 1971 General Motors (GM) took a stake in the company. As a result, Isuzu also participated in GMs Weltauto developed at Opel (the “T-Car” project, known in Europe as the Opel Kadett C among other things ), from which the Isuzu Gemini emerged . In the 1980s, the Aska and Piazza models also appeared . Since the early 1990s, the company has only produced off-road vehicles, trucks and buses . At times, Honda and the GM subsidiaries Holden , Opel and Vauxhall sold Isuzu SUVs under their name.
General Motors sold its shares in Isuzu in April 2006 for approx. 300 million dollars, but initially kept the engine works under the name Isuzu Motors with factories and the like. a. in Tychy, Poland and in Ginsheim-Gustavsburg in Germany. In 2007 Isuzu Motors Ltd. bought the Isuzu Motors Germany GmbH back.
The development departments in Japan are also integrated into the GM group as GMIDEL. So Isuzu is currently an independent brand. Existing collaborations with GM are to be continued. The Isuzu Sales Germany GmbH in Florsheim am Main Since August 2006, the German importer of Isuzu commercial vehicles and passenger cars and is currently expanding its dealer network to new.
Toyota bought 5.9% of the shares in November 2006 and has since been the third largest shareholder after ITOCHU and Mitsubishi.
identity
Compared to other Japanese manufacturers, Isuzu has few independently developed car models in its range. Above all, the close cooperation with General Motors has led Isuzu to produce third-party developments such as the Isuzu Gemini . For a long time, GM Isu also refused to compete with other companies in the group in their home markets or to sell vehicles in these markets under its own name (for example in Australia ). Therefore, Isuzu is better known abroad as a manufacturer of niche vehicles such as off-road vehicles or pick-ups.

Diesel engines
Modern diesel engine developments at Opel in Opel vehicle series came in part from Isuzu (1.5 D ( Corsa A), 1.5 TD ( Corsa A, Kadett E (Export)), 1.7 D ( Combo A, Corsa B), 1.7 TDS (Astra F, Vectra A), 1.7 DTI (Astra G, Corsa C, Combo B, Meriva A), 1.7 CDTI (Astra G, H, J, Corsa C, D, Meriva A, B and Zafira B) and 3.0 CDTI (Signum / Vectra C). Previously, Opel had always said that Isuzu represented the diesel competence within the GM group.
The 1.7-liter engines in particular have been further developed over the years and adapted to the applicable emissions regulations in the EU . The 1.7-liter diesel engines used in the 1990s still worked with indirect injection, with and without a turbocharger and an intercooler . From February 2000 this engine for the Opel Astra G was converted to direct injection and equipped with a 16-valve head with two overhead camshafts. It was available in two power levels with 55 kW as y17dt and with 50 kW as y17dtl only in the Corsa C, Combo B and Meriva A). This engine was offered in the Astra G from 2001 in the equipment variant ECO 4, which was the first “affordable” 4-liter car in the compact class. From 2004, this engine received common rail injection, with which it has an output of 81 and 92 kW in the Astra J and Zafira B (2011), and 96 kW in the Corsa D and Meriva B (2011) - each in accordance with the Euro 5 emissions standard. This engine is considered to be very economical and durable.
Honda also offered the 1.7-liter Isuzu engine in different power levels in the Honda Civic in the 2000s . There was also a marine version of the engine.
At the same time, Opel offers the 1.3 CDTI and 1.9 CDTI engines, which are a joint development by GM Powertrain and originally from the FIAT group. In terms of performance and consumption, these engines are at the top of their segment.
However, Isuzu also had the 3.0 l V6 CDTI engines (Isuzu 6DE1), the Euro 3 (Opel Y30DT, 177 hp 370 Nm, 330 Nm with automatic transmission) and the Euro 4 Emissions standard (Opel Z30DT, 184 hp 400 Nm) and were used in the Opel Vectra / Opel Signum / Opel Vectra Caravan .
The Euro 4 engine was available with a maintenance-free soot particle filter as standard .
The same engine was also used by Renault in the luxury models Renault Vel Satis and Renault Espace 3.0 dCi in combination with a 5-speed automatic transmission. Furthermore, the engine was still used in the Saab 9-5 as a 3.0 TiD. The 6DE1 as a 3.0 TiD and 3.0 dCi has only 177 hp and 350 Nm. The successor to Renault's Euro 3 engine has 181 hp.
Particularly the pleasant noise behavior and the even maximum engine torque of 400 Nm over a wide speed range were convincing. However, the engines were considered unreliable until 2004; thermal problems arose. Saab and Opel (Z30DT 2009) no longer offer these engines since 2005.
