The Wolseley Motor Company was a British automobile manufacturer .
history
In 1895 Herbert Austin began developing three-wheeled vehicles for the Wolseley Sheep Shearing Company's newly founded subsidiary in Birmingham . The first Wolseley automobile was presented in 1896. Austin left the company in 1905 and started his own company. Between 1905 and 1910 the designer John Davenport Siddeley ran the company, the vehicles were marketed as Wolseley-Siddeley . During this time, the company developed the first snowmobile that was used on the Terra Nova Expedition (1910–1913) under the direction of the British polar explorer Robert Falcon Scott . In memory of this, the Wolseley Buttress massif on the Antarctic Peninsula bears the manufacturer's name. During the First World War , Wolseley Hispano-Suiza - V8 aircraft engines produced under license.
In 1927 Wolseley went bankrupt and was taken over by Morris . Since then, identical parts have been used in models from the Morris, MG and Wolseley brands . After the Second World War , the Wolseley models became more and more similar to the Morris models. In 1949 production facilities were relocated to the Morris factory in Cowley . From then on, automobiles offered under the brand name Wolseley were only more luxuriously equipped variants of Morris models (so-called badge engineering ). In 1975, the new parent company, British Leyland , stopped producing automobiles with the brand name Wolseley; the last Wolseley was a high quality version of the BLMC ADO71 .
