Heeley Motor & Manufacturing Company Ltd. , previously C. Portass & Son Ltd. , was a British manufacturer of machinery and automobiles .

Company history

Charles Portass founded a company in Sheffield in 1899 to manufacture optical and scientific instruments. In 1907 it became C. Portass & Son Ltd. when his son Stanley Moore Portass joined the company. Between 1914 and 1918 they manufactured ammunition and parts for the aircraft manufacturer Sopwith Aviation Company . In 1920 the production of automobiles began, designed by HF Goode . The brand name was HFG . Automobile production ended in 1921. Then it was renamed Heeley Motor & Manufacturing Company . Up until around 1930, bodies were made for passenger cars , delivery vans and light trucks . The company was active as a machine manufacturer until 1977.

Automobiles

The company manufactured small cars. The base was a tubular frame. An air-cooled two - cylinder boxer engine was mounted on the passenger side, connected to a friction gear and drove the rear axle. One source mentions engines with 8 HP , 9 HP and 12 HP, another only an engine with 1244 cm³ displacement , and a third an engine with 9 HP. The body offered space for two people. The price was £ 195 .
