delivery trucks

A delivery van is a three-, four- or six-wheeled motor vehicle that is primarily intended for the transport of goods and for which a driver's license is sufficient. A delivery van has a fixed load compartment partition and usually only two seats in front of it. In exceptional cases, there may be a second row of seats, which are then only of emergency seat quality. The decisive factor is the legal classification as a truck and / or the design.

Legal classification

In Germany

In Germany, the definition of a delivery van under road traffic law is that the load compartment must be longer than the passenger compartment. Here, measurements are taken from the accelerator pedal to the inside edge of the tailgate. The load compartment partition must be closer to the accelerator than to the tailgate. If this regulation is met, the vehicle can be registered as a truck, which can mean a lower tax burden for vehicles with diesel engines. Delivery vans are classified as trucks under traffic law and are therefore not allowed to pull trailers on Sundays, for example ( Sunday driving ban for trucks with trailers). As an external distinguishing feature, some delivery vans have sheet metal panels instead of glass in the rear doors and instead of the rear side windows.

The term delivery van is not used or defined in the legal texts. Only different rules are defined for different types of motor vehicle, e.g. B. under what conditions a reduced taxation can take place.

In Austria

In Austria, the purchase of a new delivery vehicle is pre-tax deductible, and the standard consumption tax (NoVA) is not incurred, which would be incurred when buying a comparable minibus or car model.

Designs

Delivery vans are characterized as small commercial vehicles with predominantly cargo space, which can be found in different designs.

Škoda Fabia practice

Many car models, mostly for vehicle class " small car " and the body form "three-door hatchback " or "three-door station wagon " properly, there are vans versions, which are characterized in that even behind the front seats, the cargo area starts (two-seater) and the rear side windows contain no glass (sheet metal) or are simply glued shut.

When buying a car, the alternative of a delivery van can also be offered to private individuals, especially since many delivery vans have car driving characteristics and dimensions. Those who get by with two seats often travel cheaper with a delivery van. Many manufacturers offer very similar versions, although the hatchback or station wagon and delivery van differ little technically.

Box van

Panel vans are one of the most typical delivery vans. They are available from small cars to trucks with bodies. Pickups with a body are often referred to as panel vans. The most widespread, however, are box vans that are based on small or compact cars, so that the car is identical to the car up to the B-pillar and then the box is separated from it in height and often in width.

High roof combination

The high roof station wagon is usually the successor to the van the size of a car. This independent design is neither identical to a hatchback or station wagon like the delivery van , nor is it identical to another model up to the B-pillar, like the panel van . It is usually available both as a passenger car version with rear side windows and as a delivery van.

Vans

Small vans are available as independent model series or as delivery van versions for vans and minibuses. The sizes can vary greatly.

Commercial vehicles with box bodies

According to the definition, commercial vehicles with box bodies are not part of the delivery van, but are colloquially included - especially when the vehicles are smaller than the classic truck.

Terminology

There is no exact definition for the terms delivery vans, panel vans and vans. The following overview shows the usage and the overlap.

Example: A hatchback or station wagon with sheet metal rear side windows is no longer a car, but a commercial vehicle as a delivery van.
