Halwart Schrader

Halwart Schrader (born February 24, 1935 in Braunschweig ) is a German journalist , automobile historian, author and publicist.

Career

Schrader lived with his family in his childhood years in Braunschweig, Halberstadt , Munich and Berlin . He started school in Berlin in 1941. Until 1954 he also attended schools in Wernigerode and Kirchberg an der Jagst . From 1954 to 1957, Schrader attended the master school for arts and crafts in Berlin, where he studied commercial graphics and art history .

After completing his studies, Schrader lived on a cutter in Hamburg for two years before he got a job as an advertising assistant at Augstein & Jahr-Verlag in 1957. After a brief study visit to France in 1959 , he co-founded the advertising agency FW Heye in 1960 with offices in Oberursel , Düsseldorf and Munich. In the same year he became editor-in-chief of the Auto-Union / Audi customer magazines in Munich. In 1961 he also became editor-in-chief of BMW JOURNAL, which he co-founded. From 1964 to 1972, Schrader also worked as an editor for the automotive division of the magazine twen .

Between 1965 and 1973 he was a limited partner at Schrader Verlag in Unterhaching . 1966/1967 he was also in charge of marketing for tourism in Greece .

From 1970 he translated motor vehicle literature for the Orell Füssli publishing house in Zurich . From 1972 Schrader worked as a freelancer for the Auto Zeitung for ten years and from 1973 as a contract author for 16 years at BLV Verlag in Munich. For three years between 1973 and 1976 he also wrote articles as a freelance writer for the magazine ER and the German Playboy .

In addition to his work as a partner in the Schrader & Partner GmbH publishing house in Munich from 1973 to 1988, Schrader worked as a consultant for EurotaxSchwacke from 1974 to 1979 . From 1974 to 1985 he was editor of the magazine Automobil-Chronik .

In 1974 he became a member of the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) in the United States . Eleven years later he was one of the founding members of the Michael Sedgwick Memorial Trust in Beaulieu . In the same year he joined the Association of Motor Journalists (VdM) and from 1986 published the Schrader Motor Chronik as editor . From 1986 Schrader worked as editor of the oldtimer catalog at Heel Verlag in Königswinter and in 1987 also became a contract author for Archiv Verlag . For two years he also worked as the Germany editor for Autos International in Paris .

In 1988 Schrader moved from Munich to Hösseringen . There he founded the Schrader publishing house in the same year and was a partner in it for seven years. From 1992 Schrader wrote for Auto Focus . In 1995 he became a contract author with the Paul Pietsch Group , which also includes the Motorbuch Verlag. In the same year the Schrader publishing house was taken over by the Paul Pietsch group and the publishing program was finally integrated into the Motorbuch publishing house in 2004.

In 1997 he was inducted into the Guild of Motoring Writers and one year later was a founding member of the Automobile Historical Society (AHG) . From 1999 he worked on the Art of the Motorcycle of the Guggenheim Collection and in 2000 wrote for The Beaulieu Encyclopaedia of the Automobile . From 2000 to 2003 he was a member of the FIA's Historical Commission .

In 2002 Schrader published his first book in the series "Schrader Auto Chronik". In 2003, Motorbuch-Verlag dropped the name Schrader as a publication name. In 2004, the year Schrader was accepted into the Society of Automotive Historians , he relocated to Honfleur . Four years later he came back to Germany and now lives in Hösseringen again.
