Automobile historical society

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Automobilhistorische Gesellschaft e. V. (AHG) is the association of German-speaking experts who deal with the history of the automobile in general and in corresponding sub-areas.

Society

The AHG was founded in 1997 in Berlin . The founding members were Georg Amtmann, Erik Eckermann, Peter Kirchberg , Michael Graf Wolff Metternich , Hans-Otto Neubauer, Matthias Pfannmüller, Halwart Schrader and Dr. Immo Sievers. One of the honorary members is the coachbuilder Johannes Beeskow .

The AHG board currently consists of motor journalist Wolfgang Blaube (first chairman since 2013), lawyer Jan-Hendrik Wolf (second chairman since 2016) and banker Thomas Ulrich (managing director since 2013). According to its own account, the AHG is economically and politically independent. Its membership structure is largely made up of historians, publicists, technicians, lecturers, chroniclers, archivists, museum operators, curators and private collectors.

Purposes and goals

The original purpose of the AHG was formulated as follows in the founding manifesto:

  • “The purpose of the association is to maintain automobile history, in particular to bring together historians who have proven themselves in the field of automobile history. The association is intended to promote the exchange of ideas among members, research in the field of automotive history and the publication of research results, especially in the field of training.
  • "The association has set itself the goal of collecting and preserving documents on automobile history."

In the meantime, this endeavor is supplemented in the self-presentation as follows:

  • “(Since AHG was founded ...) the way we deal with the development of our motorization culture has changed significantly; above all because the public relations work of large industrial companies increasingly cites historical achievements and achievements. This is not always done objectively, but increasingly in the form of 'brand-friendly colored interpretations'. That is why the AHG sees itself today as a critical, corrective body with two core goals:
    • to promote the truthful presentation of automotive historical contexts in the media and the public
    • to work for those models, innovations and achievements of past companies that run the risk of being forgotten apart from brand communication and media presence. The same goes for the people behind it.
  • The appreciation of faded names and achievements from automotive history is a central topic in numerous specialist articles and specialist books that have so far been published by our members. "

Partnerships

The association is linked to the ADAC's classic car section as the German representative of FIVA (Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens) and the parliamentary group of Automobiles Kulturgut in the German Bundestag. There are close contacts to the major automotive historical associations in Italy (AISA; Associazione Italiana per la Storia dell'Automobile), Great Britain (SAHB; The Society of Automotive Historians in Britain) and the USA (SAH; The Society of Automotive Historians), as well as to the Classic sections of all German and many foreign automobile manufacturers as well as practically all German-speaking specialist media. Some AHG members provide advice to automobile manufacturers, museums and event organizers. In cooperation with the Society of automotive historians in Britain (SAHB) , the 1st Pan-European Conference of Automotive Historians was held in Mulhouse from May 26th to 28th, 2017 .
