The BLV Buchverlag is a brand of the Ratgeber-Verlag Gräfe und Unzer in Germany. The main topics are the areas of garden and nature, sport, fitness, cooking and do-it-yourself. BLV books are almost exclusively original editions, licenses are sold in all European countries as well as in the USA and in countries on the Asian continent.

history

The company was founded in 1946 as “Bayerischer Landwirtschaftsverlag” by the Bavarian Farmers' Association, which has been the company's main shareholder ever since. Already with the certificate issued by the US military government, “to publish books and periodicals” was allowed, because after the war the association wanted to actively support its farmers and rural women with a variety of specialist literature in the reconstruction. Therefore, various agricultural papers and textbooks appeared in quick succession. The BLV developed from an agricultural publisher to a general-interest publisher in the 1950s: Hedwig Maria Stuber's universal cookbook Ich helf Dirochen, first published in 1955, sold 100,000 copies in the first year - and around 3.5 million copies to date. This was followed by titles on hunting and the first mountain touring books by Walter Pause and the South Tyrol illustrated books by Sepp Schnürer. In October 2018, Graefe und Unzer Verlag acquired the rights to the BLV brand and selected titles in the program. Gräfe und Unzer is actively developing new titles under the BLV label. The BLV will have its own novelty program from autumn 2019.

Publishing program

Due to the growing importance of the publishing house outside of Bavaria and the constantly expanding publishing program, the company was renamed "BLV Verlagsgesellschaft mbH, Munich" in 1969. In the 1970s the publisher contacted Reinhold Messner and has published many of his books since then. In addition, a wide-ranging sports book program was created, which was gradually expanded with fitness and wellness titles.

The garden became the focus from the 1970s: the program grew with guides on all topics to do with ornamental and kitchen gardens. For example, gardening has been based on the principles from Der Biogarten , a term that was first coined by this book, for over three decades . The standard work on good gardening knowledge was a minor sensation at the time: author Marie-Luise Kreuter convinced generations of (hobby) gardeners that gardening according to nature's rules is successful and sustainable.

Nature is another subject area of the publisher: Since 1988, The BLV Animal and Plant Guide by Wilhelm Eisenreich, Alfred Handel and Ute E. Zimmer has appeared in the nature book program . The book has now been sold more than three million times.

In 2001, the BLV divisions were divided into two companies: since then, all magazines have been published by Deutscher Landwirtschaftsverlag (dlv), and BLV Buchverlag only publishes books.
