The AV Motors Ltd. was a British manufacturer of cycle cars based on Somerset Road in Teddington (Middlesex) between 1919 and 1924 . The company was founded as Ward and Avey . After the production of the AV cars was discontinued, it became Jowett and later a dealer of the Rootes Group .

history

The AV, one of the more successful cycle cars, was based on the construction of Carden and was also created in its former factory building. At the height of manufacturing activity there were 80 employees.

The first model was the single-seater Monocar , which was only 762 mm wide, the superstructure of which was supplied by the Thames Valley Pattern Works . The bodies were made of wood. Plywood or even just pressed paper. The complete car weighed only 250 kg. The air-cooled engines were installed in the rear and made 5-8 bhp (3.7-5.9 kW). They mostly came from JAP , sometimes from Blackburne or MAG. There were two-stage planetary gears or three-speed spur gears from Sturmey-Archer with chain drives to the rear axle. There was a cable steering system, whereby the entire front axle was rotated on early models (turntable steering). Several hundred of this car were made.

In 1920 there was also a two-seater, the bi-car , in which the passenger sat behind the driver. The width of this car was 914 mm. and about 50 copies were made. In 1921, a more conventional two-seater with seats arranged next to one another, called a runabout, was offered, the body of which was 1067 mm wide and 3200 mm long.

The production of the Monocar and Bi-Car ceased in 1922, but the runabout continued to be built until 1924, when it was still available to order. In 1923 the company name was changed to AV Motors Ltd. has been changed.
