Company history

Rhode from 1925

The company Rhode Motor Co of Birmingham was founded by Frederick William Mead and Tom Deakin. Mead worked for the Lanchester Motor Company during the first two decades of the 20th century . From about 1910 Mead and Deakin developed plans to set up their own automobile production; the outbreak of the First World War prevented its implementation. In 1921 the production of automobiles began. In 1926 the company had around 300 employees who produced around 50 vehicles per week. After a general strike in 1926, production came to a temporary standstill. The company had to reorganize before automobile production could resume in 1928. In the period from 1921 to 1928, Rhode built a total of 5,000 cars. In 1931 Rhode was bankrupt and was dissolved. Frederick William Mead Mead first went to Morris, where he worked as the head of the testing department. In 1932 he founded the coachwork company Meredith Coachcraft , which ceased operations before the outbreak of World War II . Mead's son Richard ran the coachbuilding company Richard Mead Coach Building in the early post-war period .
