The Carinthian ice hockey derby is the oldest duel in Austrian ice hockey . This is the local encounter between the two Carinthian ice hockey teams EC KAC ( Klagenfurt ) and EC VSV ( Villach ), both of which are currently the oldest teams in the Austrian ice hockey league .
history
The very first derby took place in 1929. The EC VSV defeated the EC KAC 3: 1, with the Klagenfurt team having entered without hockey shoes and protectors. The official derby statistics began with the championship game on January 4, 1950. The EC KAC won 7-2 in Villach. In the first few years it was a one-sided affair for the KAC, only on January 10, 1959, the EC VSV won its first derby. It ended 3-1 for the home side in Villach. From January 30, 1963 to October 11, 1977, the supporters of both clubs had to wait for the next meeting, as the EC VSV was playing in the 2nd division at that time .
The longest winning streak that has ever been recorded in Derby history was achieved by the EC VSV with 17 consecutive wins over a period of two years and 21 days (February 18, 2005 to March 11, 2007), including a full season ( 2005/06 ) counted without defeat.
Special derbies
On 9 January 2010, history in Austrian ice hockey was made with the Carinthian open-air derby . The match (an otherwise conventional league game) was played in front of 30,500 spectators in Klagenfurt's Wörthersee Stadium , which meant an Austrian record for league games. The planned Europe-wide audience record for a league match was unfortunately broken in Gothenburg a few days before the derby. The first 27,500 tickets were sold within 24 hours, the remaining tickets went on sale in January. The EC VSV won the game 3: 1.
Special statistics
The all-time top scorer in the Carinthian Derby is Canadian Edward Lebler , who scored a total of 69 goals (56 for the EC KAC and 13 for the EC VSV).
The best Austrian is Peter Raffl from Villach , who scored 54 times for his club.
In total there were 25 shutouts in the 310 matches , of which the EC KAC scored fifteen and the EC VSV scored ten. The highest victory of all time dates back to January 27, 1960, when the EC KAC defeated their local rivals 16-0 in their eighteenth game on their own ice.
