Scottish Aviation was a British aircraft manufacturer based in Prestwick , South Ayrshire .

Company history

The company was founded in 1935 as a flight school and began servicing aircraft in 1938. During the Second World War it took on the final assembly of aircraft from other manufacturers and the maintenance of Consolidated B-24 Liberator bombers. After the war, Scottish Aviation used converted Liberators as civil line aircraft for flights operated by Flugfélag Íslands Iceland Airways to Scotland .

After the war, the company developed and built the Pioneer and Twin Pioneer military transport aircraft . After the collapse of the Handley Page Aircraft Company in 1970, it began building the Jetstream transport and training aircraft. It acquired the rights to the Bulldog training aircraft from the manufacturer Beagle Aircraft , which also went bankrupt in 1970 .

In 1977 Scottish Aviation merged with British Aircraft Corporation , Hawker Siddeley Aviation and Hawker Siddeley Dynamics to form British Aerospace . Some parts of the company were later sold to the American manufacturer Spirit AeroSystems .

Scamp

In 1965, the company started producing electric cars . The first public presentation did not take place until 1967 at the Ideal Homes Exhibition . Production also ended in 1967. A total of twelve vehicles were built. Ten of these were given to various energy supply companies. The brand name was Scamp .

The vehicles were only 2132 mm long. The fiberglass coupé body offered space for two people. Two electric motors with 2.7 HP each drove a rear wheel via a chain. The maximum speed was specified with 56 km / h and the range with 35 km. The sale price should be £ 330 .
