The Scottish Aviation Pioneer was a single-engine multi-role transport aircraft produced by the Scottish manufacturer Scottish Aviation . It had space for one pilot and five passengers.

history

The Pioneer was based on the specifications of the British Aviation Department for a light liaison aircraft. The three-seater shoulder- wing aircraft was powered by a de Havilland Gipsy Queen engine with 179 kW. The first flight of the A4 / 45 prototype took place on November 5, 1947. Due to the unsatisfactory drive, the Royal Air Force (RAF) decided not to purchase the model. Scottish Aviation then decided to offer the Pioneer with a more powerful engine on the civilian market.

The prototype of the Pioneer II had an Alvis Leonides engine with 388 kW and completed its maiden flight on May 5, 1950. The Pioneer II impressed with its STOL properties, and so the RAF agreed to buy the aircraft and as Pioneer CC.1 in service.

The RAF used the model, among other things , for evacuations in Malaya , the 267th Squadron stationed there was the first pioneer association in Aden and Cyprus from 1954 . Due to its unusual design, it could start on makeshift slopes with a length of 70 meters. The aircraft flew with the 230 Squadron at RAF Odiham until 1962 and in the Far East it was in British service with the 20th Squadron at RAF Tengah until 1969 .

Other buyers were the Ceylon air forces with four and Malaysia with nine aircraft.
