It was the fifth model in the Opel Kadett / Astra series produced since mid-1962 . In Great Britain, this generation, like its predecessor, was marketed as the Vauxhall Astra .

In just under nine years, a total of 3,779,289 copies rolled off the assembly line.

Model history

General

Rear view

When sales began in August 1984, both the three- or five-door hatchback versions and the likewise three- or five-door station wagon caravan were available from dealers. The latter was also offered in the three-door version as a delivery van without rear side windows. The fifth generation of the Opel Kadett (E) came on the market in 1984 as the successor to the Opel Kadett (D). The Opel Kadett was available as a three- or five-door hatchback sedan, notchback variant, station wagon, convertible and as a delivery van and panel van. The Kadett was offered with gasoline engines from 1.2 to 2.0 liters and an output of 40 to 115 kW and diesel engines with 1.5 to 1.7 liters and an output of 40 to 60 kW.

In September 1985, shortly after the IAA presentation, the notchback version followed, which Opel called “Formheck”.

The Kadett E also served as the basis for the panel van with the model name Opel Combo , which was produced from January 1986 to July 1994 . While the delivery van has the shape of the caravan, the combo with a higher roof, longer wheelbase, leaf spring rear axle and its rear doors that open to the side is a real van.

In May 1987, the last version was the convertible , which was designed and built by Bertone . Because of its streamlined body, which was tested in the wind tunnel, it was soon nicknamed "Windei".

Facelift

In February 1989 the series received a facelift, which can be recognized from the outside by the smaller radiator grille.

Production of the last Kadett series was completed in July 1991. Its successor was named " Astra ". The only model variant that remained in the range until May 1993 was the convertible, before it was replaced by the open version of the Astra in late summer.

Engines

The Opel Kadett E was only offered with four-cylinder engines installed transversely at the front. Except for the GSi 16V with two overhead camshafts and 16 valves and the 1.2-liter engine with side camshaft and overhead valves , they have one overhead camshaft and eight valves:

Chassis / transmission

The chassis of the Kadett E was only slightly modified from the previous Kadett D model. As a typical front-wheel drive compact car, it has independent suspension on MacPherson struts with lower wishbones at the front and a torsion beam axle at the rear. Manual four- and five-speed vehicle transmissions were installed as the transmission. A three-speed automatic transmission of the type THM 125 from the parent company General Motors was available with some engines.

Cadet GSi

Opel Kadett GSi (1990)

The Opel Kadett E GSi was initially only offered as a hatchback and from 1987 also as a convertible. At the beginning it was sold with a 1.8-liter gasoline engine (internal identification: 18E) with 85 kW / 115 PS output without a catalytic converter. From 1986 it was also offered with the 74kW / 100PS strong engine C18NE. For model year 1987 the 1.8-liter engines were discontinued and were equipped with two different 2.0-liter engines (C20NE with catalytic converter 85kW / 115PS and 20SEH without catalytic converter 95kw / 129PS).

The Kadett GSi has gas pressure shock absorbers and, compared to the other models , springs that are tighter and approx. 15 mm shorter. The engines of the Kadett GSi have an oil cooler with a thermostat . The Kadett GSi was delivered with an anti-lock braking system and power steering on request . The version without power steering has a steering damper . The Opel Kadett GSi is equipped with internally ventilated disc brakes on the front axle.

The bumpers are more voluminous. Plastic panels are attached to the side skirts. The side protection strips are narrower, ventilation elements have been integrated into the bonnet, the rear lights have been darkened by embedded plastic strips. The rear fog light is also in the rear bumper, which means that the Kadett GSi has two reversing lights. The rear wiper was relocated because of the rear wing and driven through a hole in the rear window. In addition to the B-pillars, the tailgate between the rear lights is also covered with black film. The Opel emblems are attached to the bonnet and tailgate as a film. These measures make the GSi variant look different from the basic models.

Electric windows, electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors and an on-board computer were available as accessories. The on-board computer shows the current consumption, tank range, average speed, average consumption, stopwatch and the time.

In the interior, the Kadett GSi also differs from the basic models in features such as sports seats, LCD instruments, three-spoke steering wheel with GSi emblem, check control system in the upper area of the dashboard, as well as changed seat covers, two reading lights and door panels. As a special extra, seats and side panels covered with Connolly leather were available on request.

In the three-door hatchback version, the GSi achieved a drag coefficient (c w ) of 0.30, which was not achieved by any other vehicle in the compact class at the time (Golf II GTI: 0.37). This value is also proof that the plastic add-on parts of the GSi variant tested in the wind tunnel not only served the sporty appearance, but also had an aerodynamic function and both reduced lift and drag. The Kadett with hatchback without "spoiler" achieves a drag coefficient of 0.32.

The number of Kadett GSi in Germany has decreased drastically in recent years. The following number of vehicles was registered with the Federal Motor Transport Authority on the respective key dates :

Kadett GSi 16V

Opel Kadett GSi Champion 16V
(1990–1991)
Modified Opel Kadett GSi 16V in rally use

The Kadett GSi 16V came onto the market in spring 1988 and is the first large-scale Opel model with four valves per cylinder. The specialty of the engine used (internal identifier: C20XE for the variants with a regulated catalytic converter) is the joint development of the very elaborately designed cylinder head with Cosworth in England. In contrast to the GSi 8V 2.0 l (C20NE), the engine has a manifold and knock control . Compared to the C20NE, the intake manifold is also much more complex.

The Kadett GSi 16V is adapted to the performance of the engine in numerous points. The rear axle was equipped with disc brakes (two-piston fixed calipers) instead of drum brakes. In addition, a reinforced anti-roll bar was installed at the front and an additional anti-roll bar on the torsion beam rear axle. The body of the Kadett 16V has a continuous central cross member at the front and a flatter lower cross member at the front, which means that the slightly narrower but higher radiator can be accommodated. In addition, the wheel arches are reinforced in the upper area at the transition to the A-pillar. There are also modifications to the steering and chassis. The five-speed manual gearbox (F20) of the Kadett 16V was also adapted to the power of the engine. The body had a C w value of 0.30 and a frontal area of 2.03 m², which gives an aerodynamic drag area of 0.61 m².

The interior differs from the GSi 2.0 with a different gear knob (made of leather) and the 16V emblem on the steering wheel. Externally, the Kadett GSi 16V can be distinguished from the Kadett GSi by a 16V symbol on the front apron and on the tailgate. It also has a rear silencer with double rectangular tailpipes.

The special model Kadett GSi Champion, which, like the series GSi, was available with the 2.0i 8V (C20NE) as well as with the 2.0i 16V (C20XE), was offered from April 1990. At the beginning it was only available with three doors and had a standard English Connolly leather interior with leather seats from Recaro and leather-covered door panels. With the beginning of the 1991 model year in September 1990, the special model Champion was no longer only available as a three-door, but also as a five-door. Velor fabrics were now available ex works for all champions. The leather upholstery, still only available for the three-door Kadett GSi Champion, now cost 2400 DM surcharge. However, the five-door GSi could also be ordered with leather upholstery, but not for the five-door special model Champion. Only the five-door basic model GSi could be equipped with leather. However, the leather interior for the five-door model cost more than 1,200 DM more than for the three-door model. The five-door GSi 16V cost around 40,000 DM without any additional extras. The five-door version with full equipment in its original state is therefore a rarity today, not least because the five-door was sold far less often than the three-door. The 15-inch cross-spoke light alloy wheels with 185/55 R15 tires were also standard on the Kadett GSi Champion. Besides the Kadett Cabrio Spezial Edition, it was the only German Kadett model with standard 15-inch wheels.

The stock of Kadett GSi 16V (manufacturer / type code number 0039/773) in Germany has decreased drastically in recent years. The following number of vehicles was registered with the Federal Motor Transport Authority on the respective key dates :

Performance

The factory specifications for the Kadett GSi 16V were 7.9 s for acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h and a top speed of 217 km / h.

Competing models

At the time, the Kadett GSi 16V with 110 kW (150 PS) was far superior to its direct competitor, the Golf II GTI 16V , the engine of which in the version with catalytic converter still had 95 kW (129 PS), in terms of performance and at the same time required less fuel than other competing models.

Special features of the GT and Frisco models / Caravan Club Special

The Kadett E as GT and Frisco has a slightly changed, shorter gear ratio and some special equipment features. For example modified bumpers (from model year 1987), sports seats and a standard rev counter.

The Frisco model was also equipped with ABS as standard. In addition, the Frisco was optionally available with hydraulic power steering, as well as seat height adjustment and the rear side panels (only three-door models) matching the upholstery in the same material.

The GT and Frisco models were exclusively equipped with the well-known 1.6i engine (C16NZ - 55 kW / 75 PS) and the 1.8i engine (C18NZ - 66 kW / 90 PS) that was first available in 1990. The GT version was available between 1986 and 1987 with the C16LZ; the C16NZ was installed from mid-1987. The 2.0-liter engine (85 kW / 116 PS) was only available in the notchback version of both models.

The GT had three stages of evolution:

GT 1 (model year 1985–1986): gray bumpers, with gray side decor below the side strip, gray rear spoiler, GT logo in body color on front doors, interior with upholstery Lyon with door panels in synthetic leather, engines: 13S, 16SH, C18NT (1985), C18NE (1986)

GT 2 (model year 1987 to 1989 1/2): bumpers with trim in body color, bumpers and side strips with red decorative stripes, rear spoiler in body color, GT logo in gray or anthracite on front doors, interior with upholstery Lyon with door panels in upholstery fabric, also as Notchback, engines 16SV (1987), C16LZ / NZ, E18NV, C20NE (only GT notchback), except for the engines and the modified interior, the GT 2 corresponds to the Kadett E special model Sprint from model year 1986.

GT 3 (model year 1989 1/2 to 1990): bumpers in body color, rear spoiler in body color, plaid / sport upholstery, C16NZ, C18NZ and C20NE engines (notchback only), also applies to the Frisco

Similar to the GT, the caravan was in the Club version. Even if the external GT features were missing, the range of engines was similar and the interior also corresponded to the Kadett GT. Originally the Kadett E Caravan Club was a special model in the model year 1987, which found its way into the offer as a series model due to the great demand. For the 1991 model year, the Club Special was offered based on the Kadett Caravan Club. It has the same equipment features as the Caravan Club, but the Club Special also has the painted front bumper of the Kadett GT and a rear apron in the same color as the car. There are also exterior mirrors in body color, tinted glazing, roof rails, rev counter, cassette box, load compartment cover and SC 202 radio on board. "Edition" logo of the Kadett Cabriolet

From August 1991, the convertible version of the Kadett E produced by Bertone in Turin was only referred to as an Opel Cabrio (only in the registration papers still as Kadett ) and was also equipped with the body details of the Kadett GSi in weaker engine variants .

Due to production problems with the successor Astra Cabrio, the Kadett Cabrio was produced until May 1993, while the production of the other models was stopped in July 1991. Shortly before the end of production there were only special models of the Kadett convertible. They were called e.g. B. Edition Sportive, Edition Elegance, Edition Fun or Bertone Edition.

designation

The Kadett E was the last compact car from Opel in Germany with the traditional name Kadett . The successor model was named Astra ( Astra F ), while Vauxhall was already selling the Kadett in Great Britain under this name. In South Africa, the Astra F continued to be sold under the name Opel Kadett F.

International models

The Kadett E was the first model developed in Germany to be offered on the American market again after a twenty-year break. The externally modified version there was called Pontiac LeMans and was produced by Daewoo in South Korea. After the blocking period set by General Motors expired in 1995, the Daewoo Nexia was also offered in Europe.

The car was also sold under the following names:

Most of the production took place at Daewoo in South Korea. Later, the Nexia and Cielo models were also produced in Craiova, Romania, and in India. The Uzbek company UzDaewoo still manufactures the Nexia in a revised form in its factory in Asaka .
