The Opel 12 PS was a mid-range car that Adam Opel KG only built in 1903.

History and technology

Opel built the 12 PS, like the 9 PS presented a year earlier , according to the system of the French manufacturer Darracq . In terms of its dimensions and engine data, it corresponded to the 10/12 PS model, which was also released in 1902, but was significantly lighter, faster and more expensive than this.

The engine was a two-cylinder in - line engine with 1885 cm³ displacement (bore × stroke = 100 mm × 120 mm), the 12 HP (8.8 kW) at 1200 / min. performed. The side-controlled T-head motor was water-cooled. The engine power was transmitted to the rear axle via a leather cone clutch, a manual three-speed gearbox with steering column gear and a cardan shaft . The top speed of the car was 55 km / h.

The frame consisted of sheet steel U-profiles and was reinforced with wood. The two rigid axles were suspended from semi-elliptical longitudinal leaf springs. The service brake acted on the transmission output shaft. The handbrake was designed as a band brake that worked on the rear wheels.

There were three body styles, a two-seat Phaeton , a four-seat tonneau and a two-seat coupé . The cheapest variant (Phaeton) cost 7200 RM.

At the end of 1903, the production of the 12 hp was stopped. The successor was the less motorized 9/10 HP model .
