The Opel 16/18 PS was an automobile of the upper class , which the Adam Opel KG 1904-1906 as a medium model built this luxury.

History and technology

In the same year, the smaller 14 hp and the larger 30/32 hp with 2.4 and 4.7 liters displacement appeared. All these cars were still to Darracq - built licenses.

The engine, which was similar to that of the larger 20/22 hp model , was a four - cylinder block engine with a displacement of 3054 cm³ (bore × stroke = 90 mm × 120 mm). It developed 18 hp (13.2 kW) at 1200 rpm. The side-controlled engine was water-cooled. The engine power was transmitted to the rear axle via a leather cone clutch, a manual three-speed gearbox with steering wheel gearshift and a cardan shaft . The maximum speed of the car was 60 km / h.

The frame consisted mainly of profile steel, but was reinforced with wood. The two rigid axles were suspended from semi-elliptical leaf springs. The service brake was designed as an external band brake that acted on the cardan shaft. The handbrake worked on the drums on the rear wheels.

The 16/18 PS was available as a two-seater Phaeton , a four-seater tonneau and a four-seater double phaeton . With the cheapest structure (Phaeton) it cost 10,500 RM.

In 1905 the larger 14/20 PS replaced the 16/18 PS, which, however, continued to be built until 1906.
