Block engine
In motorcycle construction, a block engine is a combustion engine in which the crankcase and the gearbox are combined in one block. The first block engines existed before the First World War ; thereafter the block engine became the standard there. The transaxle design is a significant exception .
In the early days of motorization, a separate gearbox was often used and the primary drive was via a covered roller chain . This design was still to be found on English motorcycles until the 1970s, e.g. B. at Norton Commando .
In contrast, in automobile and aircraft engine construction , a block engine is a type of engine in which two or three cylinders are cast together in one block . Two to three of these blocks were then assembled to form four or six cylinder in - line engines . From around the First World War, people knew how to cast the cylinders together as a cylinder bank .
